Cologne/Bonn Airport invests in emission-free ground power generators

Cologne/Bonn Airport is pushing ahead with its climate protection strategy and replacing conventional diesel ground power generators with electric versions.

In the coming months, 15 new electric ground power units (e-GPUs) will be purchased and put into operation. This investment amounts to 3,2 million euros, with 1,9 million euros being funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV). The e-GPUs supply aircraft in parking positions that are not connected to the power grid and significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

The airport is committed to the complete electrification of its apron fleet by 2035. The fleet already includes over 130 electric vehicles and equipment. The new e-GPUs are a further step towards climate-friendly aircraft handling. They are emission-free, quieter and rechargeable, which means they replace conventional diesel units.

The project is supported as part of the BMDV funding program to promote alternative technologies for the ground power supply of aircraft.
