Cologne/Bonn Airport is building a new substation at a cost of 7,8 million euros. This is scheduled to go into operation in the middle of next year.

The shell of the modern substation has already been completed and the interior work is currently underway. Starting in January, the switchgear and two transformers, each weighing around 400 tons, will be installed in the building with an area of 86 square meters, which represent the heart of the future-oriented system.

“With the new substation, we are creating an important technical prerequisite for further advancing the energy supply with renewable energy,” says Thilo Schmid, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH. “We need this powerful system to expand e-mobility and to further increase the proportion of renewable energy in the future,” says Schmid. The airport already produces electricity using its own PV systems.
