The Eurowings boss complains about rising fees and blames them for rising ticket prices. So, in order to attract more customers, it should be in Eurowings' interest to make flight ticket booking as quick and easy as possible. Nevertheless, the provider is above the average of 27 clicks to enter the payment data when booking.
For comparison: Tickets on Sky Express require the lowest number of clicks at 19 clicks. AirHelp (www.airhelp.com), the world's largest organization for air passenger rights, found this out in a recent study. For this purpose, the booking processes of the 45 most popular airlines were analyzed according to the number of clicks and duration.
Wizz Air has the most complicated booking process
The Hungarian airline Wizz Air clearly stands out in the study: It takes a whopping 44 clicks to enter the payment details. The airline thus occupies the last place in the study, bookings are the most complex here. On the other hand, EasyJet and the Romanian airline Tarom share the penultimate place in the ranking with 39 clicks, followed by Pegasus Airlines with 37 clicks.
The airline Sky Express, which is based in Heraklion, Greece, emerged as the winner of the survey: Only 19 clicks are required here before passengers are asked to pay. TUI fly also offers customers a comparatively simple booking process with 20 clicks. The airlines Iberia and Vueling Airlines needed 21 clicks to secure third place.
Wizz Air, EasyJet and AirBaltic take the longest to book
A booking with the airlines examined takes on average one minute and 34 seconds. Ticket purchases at Wizz Air are not only associated with a great deal of effort, passengers also need the most time here. Passengers need two minutes and 33 seconds to enter their payment details. The situation is similar with the low-cost airline EasyJet: passengers have to sacrifice two minutes and 24 seconds of their time for a ticket.
However, the duration of the two airlines has improved compared to the previous year: in 2022, booking with Wizz Air took two minutes and 55 seconds, with EasyJet even four minutes. In terms of duration, AirBaltic occupies the third last place in the ranking with two minutes and nine seconds.
Bookings with Sky Express and TUI fly can be made much faster. The two airlines took first place with one minute and six seconds each. The Croatian airline Trade Air and Vueling follow in second place with a duration of one minute and eight seconds. The German airline Sundair received the bronze medal with one minute and 13 seconds.
German airlines are below average when it comes to the length and complexity of bookings
Good news for passengers who rely on German airlines: The booking process for a flight ticket is comparatively uncomplicated and does not take too much time. Six of the 45 airlines examined are based in Germany. For airlines, the average number of clicks is 26, taking one minute and 30 seconds. This means that German airlines are below average in terms of both the number of clicks and the length of the booking.
Tomasz Pawliszyn, CEO of AirHelp, comments on the research: “As our research shows, there are some airlines that make their booking processes quick and relatively easy. This is good news for us. However, our data reveals large differences between airlines, especially when it comes to the number of clicks. This can be confusing for passengers, who often have to adapt to different booking processes depending on the airline. Lengthy and complicated ticket purchases can turn off potential customers. At AirHelp, we want to give passengers and airlines the best possible overview and show them where there is still room for improvement. However, the situation seems to be improving: at least the duration of the booking process has decreased significantly since the last survey in 2022.”
