The Czech Ministry of Defence has officially confirmed the purchase of two Embraer C-390 Millennium transport aircraft, a significant step towards modernising and strengthening the Czech Air Force.
With an investment of 446 million euros, the military will receive new capacities in air transport, firefighting, evacuation and air refueling in order to meet the increasing demands on security and crisis management. Defense Minister Jana Černochová stressed that the deteriorating global security situation has increased the need for solid and versatile transport capacities. The first aircraft is expected to be operational as early as next year.
Modernization of the Czech Air Force
The C-390 Millennium, developed by the Brazilian aerospace company Embraer, is intended to complement the Czech Army's current smaller transport aircraft, such as the CASA C295M and the Let L-410 turbojets. These aircraft have so far covered smaller and medium transport requirements, while the new C-390 aircraft carry larger loads and offer a longer range. The lack of sufficient transport capacity was particularly noticeable in the event of a crisis, as the recent evacuations from Afghanistan and Sudan have shown.
With a cargo capacity of up to 26 tons and the ability to take off and land on unpaved airfields, the C-390 aircraft are specially designed to operate in crisis situations where flexibility and speed are required. This means they can transport heavy equipment or humanitarian aid to remote regions.
Versatile applications of the C-390 Millennium
The procurement of the Embraer C-390 Millennium goes far beyond mere transport. The aircraft are versatile and equipped with special modules for different areas of operation. This includes the ability to refuel other aircraft in the air, which significantly increases the range and flexibility of the Czech Air Force. The aircraft are also equipped for firefighting missions from the air and the transport and evacuation of the wounded. This is a decisive advantage, especially in a Europe that is increasingly confronted with the consequences of climate change. In regions affected by forest fires, the C-390s can provide valuable support.
In addition, the aircraft are equipped with advanced self-protection systems to operate safely in hazardous environments. This is particularly relevant for international military operations in crisis areas where the risk to aircraft is increased. Another significant feature is the ability to support special forces through the use of search and rescue systems.
Economic and technological gain for the Czech Republic
A key element of the purchase agreement is the Industrial Cooperation Agreement (ICA) between Embraer and the Czech Ministry of Defense. This agreement includes a strong involvement of the local Czech industry, which will benefit from the manufacture and maintenance of the C-390. Aero Vodochody Aerospace, an established Czech aircraft manufacturer, has already played a role in the C-2011 program since 390, producing various components such as the rear fuselage, doors and loading ramp. The new contract will further expand production in the Czech Republic, which will not only strengthen the aviation industry but also create jobs in the country.
Another Czech company, LOM Praha, will be responsible for the long-term maintenance of the aircraft, thereby gaining valuable experience in the lifecycle management of modern military aircraft. Jiří Protiva, CEO of LOM Praha, highlighted the great opportunity this contract represents for the company and the Czech aviation industry. The cooperation with Embraer will enable LOM Praha to further establish itself in the global aviation sector.
Strategic importance for the Czech Republic and Europe
The acquisition of the Embraer C-390 Millennium is an important strategic step for the Czech Republic to expand its defence and crisis management capabilities. At a time when geopolitical tensions and security threats are increasing, the Czech Republic is relying on a modern and powerful air force to be able to respond flexibly to possible crisis situations. In addition, the investment in these transport aircraft shows that the Czech Republic is aware of its international responsibility in humanitarian and military missions.
The decision also sends an important signal to the European defense landscape. The close cooperation between Czech industry and an international company such as Embraer strengthens the European defense and aviation industry and creates new synergies between the countries. In an increasingly globalized world in which the security of states and their infrastructure depends on international cooperation, such contracts are of enormous importance.
By purchasing the Embraer C-390 Millennium, the Czech Republic is investing in cutting-edge technology and strengthening its military and humanitarian capabilities. The versatile use of the aircraft, combined with the involvement of domestic industry, make this purchase a significant step in the modernization of the Czech armed forces. The decision also shows that the country wants to be prepared for future crises while strengthening its position in the international aviation sector.
