Düsseldorf Airport has reached a significant milestone: for the first time since the Corona pandemic, North Rhine-Westphalia's largest airport again counted more than 20 million passengers within a year. This symbolic moment was celebrated on Monday, December 30, with a special surprise for anniversary passengers Judith and Alexander Immel. The couple were on their way to Ko Samui via Doha with Qatar Airways when they were surprised with the news at check-in.
The airport honored the anniversary passengers with exclusive gifts. In addition to an upgrade to Qatar Airways Business Class, they received a duty-free voucher and access to the airport lounge. Lars Redeligx, Managing Director of Düsseldorf Airport, emphasized the importance of this event in a speech: "20 million passengers is an outstanding result and underlines the strength of our airport as a reliable and future-oriented transport hub."
This figure is a sign that the aviation industry is on the road to recovery despite the challenges of recent years. Redeligx stressed that the airport, with its broad route network and modernized service offerings, is optimally prepared for the needs of travelers.
revival of air traffic
Exceeding the 20 million mark marks a turning point in the development of Düsseldorf Airport since the collapse in passenger volume during the pandemic. In 2020, the number of passengers handled fell drastically to below 7 million, whereas before the pandemic it was regularly around 25 million. With the recovery of travel and the resumption of many international routes, a clear turnaround is now apparent.
The increased demand for holiday travel in particular contributed to the positive development. Destinations in Southeast Asia, the Caribbean and the Middle East, but also European metropolises such as London, Paris and Rome, were particularly in demand in 2024. The role of airlines such as Qatar Airways, Emirates and Lufthansa, which use the airport as a hub, remains central.
Strategic Importance of Düsseldorf Airport
With more than 180 travel destinations worldwide, Düsseldorf Airport is an important transport hub in Europe. For travelers from North Rhine-Westphalia in particular, it offers a convenient alternative to the larger airports in Frankfurt and Munich. By investing in the infrastructure, including optimizing the terminals and new security checks, the airport is positioning itself as a modern and service-oriented location.
The reopening of new long-haul routes to Asia and North America and the increase in capacity for popular holiday destinations contributed significantly to reaching the 20 million mark. In addition, the airport is continuously investing in cooperation with airlines to expand the range of services available to passengers.
Views 2025
The airport management is optimistic that the positive trend will continue in the coming year. Lars Redeligx announced that expanding connections to North America and Asia is a priority. In addition, new services for passengers are to be introduced, including additional check-in machines and expanded lounge facilities.
The stabilization of the air traffic market and the return of the desire to travel make it clear that Düsseldorf Airport can maintain its position as one of the leading airports in Germany. Exceeding the 20 million mark is a signal of strength and confidence - not only for the airport, but for the entire region.
