The Donauinselfest, Europe's largest open-air festival with free admission, will take place from June 20 to 22, 2025, under the motto "#DeineInselEchteMomente." For over 40 years, the Vienna Festival on the Danube Island has offered a diverse program of music, action, and entertainment. Respectful and peaceful coexistence has always been at the heart of the festival, attracting visitors from Vienna and throughout Austria to the Danube Island.
Sturdy footwear is recommended for the approximately 4,5-kilometer-long festival grounds. Visitors should also check the weather forecast: Headwear, sunscreen, and plenty of water are essential in sunny weather; ponchos or rain capes should not be forgotten in rainy weather. Bags and backpacks up to size A3 are permitted, as are non-alcoholic beverages in bottles up to 0,5 liters; numerous free water dispensers offer additional refreshment. Small snacks such as muesli bars or fruit are permitted, but full meals are prohibited. Dangerous objects, weapons, umbrellas, and animals (except guide dogs and assistance dogs) are not permitted on the grounds. Bicycles and e-scooters are not permitted on the festival grounds, but guarded bicycle garages run by the ARBÖ are available for secure parking.
Arriving by public transport is strongly recommended. The Handelskai (U6), Neue Donau (U6), and Donauinsel (U1) subway stations offer direct access to the festival site. Wiener Linien shortens subway train intervals to three minutes in the evenings to facilitate departure. Bus and tram lines such as the 25, 26, 31, and 29A also offer good connections, although these intervals are also shortened on Friday and Saturday nights. A rail replacement bus service is available for train passengers on line S45 between Wien Handelskai and Wien Heiligenstadt. Due to a lack of parking near the festival site, using a car is not recommended. A shuttle service is available for people with disabilities upon prior arrangement.
Since its inception, the Donauinselfest has stood for social cohesion and an affordable, modern Vienna. As one of the most traditional and largest open-air festivals in Europe, it attracts millions of visitors every year. A special festival app offers comprehensive information on safety, services, arrival, the program, and an overview map with GPS tracking to make it easier to navigate the expansive grounds. The festival is thus not only a cultural event, but also an example of a successful major urban event that caters to the needs of its visitors.
