Both Ryanair and Wizz Air have now completely suspended their flights to Aqaba (Jordan). Due to the war in Israel, booking numbers have plummeted so much that flights are no longer being operated due to a lack of demand.

Aqaba Airport is within sight of Israel's Eilat-Ramon Airport, but on the Jordanian side of the border. The cities of Aqaba and Eilat, as well as the run-down village of Taba, share the Gulf of Aqaba. The war in Israel led to vacations in this region - including in Jordan and Egypt - are no longer in demand at all. Potential vacationers are too worried that the war could quickly spread to the border regions of neighboring countries.

Ryanair already moved on November 11, 2023 applied the emergency brake and canceled all Aqaba flights due to lack of demand. Previously, attempts were made to maintain the route through particularly low ticket prices, but that didn't help either. Wizz Air followed suit a few days later and not only canceled existing Aqaba routes, but also announced new additions. Only the plans have been changed in a few places, as Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is heading for the capital Amman instead.

Neither Ryanair nor Wizz Air want to write off the current winter season completely. For now, the Aqaba cancellations only apply for a few weeks. For example, the first-mentioned carrier intends to fly again from January 4, 2024. However, it remains to be seen how the situation in this region of the world develops. Whether reactivation actually occurs depends primarily on the booking numbers. If almost no one wants to go to Aqaba, it is very unlikely that Ryanair and/or Wizz Air will resume operations any time soon.
