An Airbus A340 belonging to the Swiss airline Edelweiss with the registration HB-JMG had to make an unexpected landing in Dubai on Monday, January 6, on the way from Zurich to Malé. The reason was the failure of one of the four engines during the flight over southeastern Iraq. After the problems arose, the aircraft, which was given the name "Melchsee-Frutt", lowered its cruising altitude from 35.000 to 31.000 feet before landing safely at Dubai International Airport 90 minutes later.
According to the portal Aviation Herald the crew was forced to adjust the flight route to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. So far, there have been no reports of injuries. The Airbus in question is currently still at Dubai airport, where technical inspections are being carried out.
Edelweiss airline has not yet released any further details about the incident. Engine failures on multi-engine aircraft are rare in the aviation industry, but safety protocols provide clear procedures in such cases to ensure the safety of passengers. The flight to Malé had to be aborted and the passengers were cared for accordingly after landing.
