From May 2025, Klagenfurt Airport will once again be directly connected to Cologne by the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings. This connection has been resumed after a two-year break and is offered twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. The flight takes just over an hour and represents an important connection to North Rhine-Westphalia, the fourth largest region in Germany.
Maximilian Wildt, the airport's managing director, praised the resumption of the route as a significant step for the economic and tourist development of the location. Wildt stressed the importance of successfully establishing the connection in order to attract more airlines. "Every functioning connection helps us to strengthen the trust of the airlines," said Wildt.
The connection to Cologne is particularly important for business travelers and tourists, as the city is considered a central location with its cultural diversity and economic importance. State Councilor Sebastian Schuschnig described the reintroduction of the route as a success for the tourism and business location. The connection to Cologne, which offers numerous connections to other European metropolises, is a benefit for the region.
Eurowings' flight schedule includes the following connections:
Departure from Cologne:
- Monday: Departure 12:15, Arrival 13:45
- Friday: Departure 14:45, Arrival 16:15
Departure from Klagenfurt:
- Monday: Departure 14:30, Arrival 15:50
- Friday: Departure 16:55, Arrival 18:15
The non-stop connection can be booked from December 2, 2024. In 2017, the connection's most successful year, over 76.000 passengers were counted, with a higher frequency of up to seven flights per week.
Since the State of Carinthia and the City of Klagenfurt took over the airport last year, other new connections have also been launched, including flights with Austrian Airlines to Vienna and Ryanair to Palma de Mallorca. These developments are beginning to show success, as passenger numbers are expected to increase in 2025 due to the expansion of flight connections.
