During the European Football Championship in Germany, restricted flight zones will be set up over the stadiums at the host venues. This was announced by the German air traffic control. The ban also includes flying drones, with the only exceptions being police and rescue services.
The measure is intended to ensure the safety of players, spectators and the general public. Violations of the drone ban can have legal consequences and can be viewed as a dangerous interference with air traffic. According to the Criminal Code, this carries a prison sentence of up to ten years.
In addition to the drone bans, further flight restrictions for manned aviation may also be activated depending on the security situation. These will depend on the police assessment of the risk posed by a game.
The European Football Championship will take place in Germany from June 14 to July 14, 2024. Temporary controls have been possible at all German borders since this Friday. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, these controls are intended to detect and ward off potential threats such as Islamist terror, hooliganism and cyber attacks at an early stage. This also affects border crossings with Denmark, France and the Benelux countries.
