France introduces temporary border controls

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The French government has decided to temporarily introduce border controls at the borders with Luxembourg and five other neighboring countries from 1 November 2024 to 30 April 2025.

The measure affects the borders with Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. This decision, which also includes land, air and sea routes, is a response to growing security concerns in Europe. The French government cited increased terrorist activities, criminal networks and the threat of irregular migration and smuggling as reasons. The EU only allows such controls for a limited period of time, with eight of the 27 EU states currently having taken corresponding measures.
