A malfunction in the Dutch Ministry of Defense's data center led to major outages at Eindhoven Airport and several government agencies on Tuesday. The IT systems of numerous institutions, including the Ministry of Justice, the Coast Guard and the Dutch Gendarmerie, were affected, the ANP news agency reported. Numerous municipalities also had to contend with the outages.
It took several hours for Eindhoven Airport to resume operations at 17 p.m. The situation caused significant delays and disruptions for thousands of travelers. Airlines and tour operators organized replacement flights and transport to other airports, including Maastricht, Düsseldorf and Brussels.
The State Center for Cyber Security (NCSC) announced that public safety in the Netherlands was not at risk and there were no indications of a cyber attack or sabotage. The cause of the outages has been narrowed down, but it will take several hours until all systems are fully restored. This is already the second major IT outage in the Netherlands within a few weeks. At the end of July, a faulty software update from a US security company led to global disruptions.
