On May 1, 2024, Iberia celebrated 85 years of continuous flights between Madrid and Lisbon and wanted to celebrate this anniversary with its customers with surprises on board. Passengers heading to Portugal's capital enjoyed delicious cookies personalized for the occasion on board, while those returning to Madrid received birthday cake during boarding.

The opening of flights to the neighboring country marked the opening of Iberia's first international route. On May 1, 1939, a Junkers Ju-52 took off for the first time from Madrid to Lisbon with 17 passengers on board. The flying experience has changed significantly since then. For flights to Lisbon, the airline offers up to six direct flights per day, operated by Airbus A320neo aircraft with space for 186 passengers.
