Starting in October 2025, the Lufthansa Group, in cooperation with Visa, will integrate the new online payment option "Click to Pay" into its booking portals. This innovation affects the airlines Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines and aims to simplify the booking process for customers while increasing security.
"Click to Pay" will enable travelers to complete their online flight bookings simply by entering their email address. This eliminates the need to repeatedly enter credit or debit card details. The prerequisite for use is a one-time registration of the desired payment card with payment networks such as Visa or directly with the issuing bank. After this initial registration, the system recognizes the user on the Lufthansa Group's booking platforms and in other participating online shops based on the stored email address. This function will also be available for first-time purchases or as a guest. The actual payment is made by selecting the stored card and confirming the purchase. Authorization by the bank, for example, via a banking app, may be required.
The new payment method will be available to all Lufthansa Group customers, regardless of their card provider. With this launch, the airline emphasizes that it will be one of the first airlines to offer "Click to Pay." Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group, underscores the company's ongoing commitment to improving its services for its customers and offering them innovative, all-round support throughout their entire journey. Albrecht Kiel, Head of Central Europe at Visa, emphasizes the simplicity and security of the new payment method, which is similar to the convenience of contactless payment.
A key advantage of "Click to Pay" is the increased security it provides for online transactions. Instead of actual card numbers, so-called tokens are used – digital placeholders that are worthless if misused. According to Visa, the use of this technology can reduce fraud by up to 80 percent compared to manual card entry without tokens. The Lufthansa Group hopes that the introduction of "Click to Pay" will further optimize its customers' travel experience, starting with the ticket purchase.
