Lufthansa passengers will need a lot of patience from five German airports on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, because the Verdi union is calling on its ground staff members to stop work.
The Lufthansa ground stations in Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Düsseldorf are affected. The employee representatives are calling on employees to go on an all-day strike due to an ongoing collective bargaining dispute that is considered deadlocked. There are a total of 25.000 employees employed by Lufthansa as well as Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa Technik, Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services, Lufthansa Engineering and Operational Services and several other subsidiaries.
For this purpose, Verdi and the Kranich Group have been negotiating an adjustment to the collective agreement for some time. Lufthansa recently submitted an improved offer, but Verdi rejected it as inadequate. The employee representatives are demanding at least 12,5 percent more salary, but at least 500 euros more per month. They also want to achieve one-off payments of 3.000 euros and improvements in the area of shift work. Lufthansa's latest offer would stipulate that there would be salary adjustments in the first eight months of employment and then, from Verdi's point of view, the increase steps would be too slow and too low.
Lufthansa is of the opinion that it has presented an attractive offer that would come close to the union's demands. It is regretted that passengers would be “disproportionately burdened” by the announced strike. The work stoppages are scheduled to begin on February 7, 2024 at 4:00 a.m. and initially last until Thursday, February 8, 2024, 7:10 a.m. Passengers must expect restrictions and cancellations.
