Lufthansa expands reactivated A380 fleet: new operations planned from Munich

Advertising

Lufthansa has added another aircraft to its reactivated A380 fleet with the D-AIMH. After a general technical overhaul in Manila, the aircraft was initially transferred to Frankfurt on June 6, 2024. It will soon begin service at the Munich hub.

The company carried out the so-called D-Check in Manila, a major inspection that was due after twelve years at the D-AIMH. The sixth A380 will soon strengthen the sub-fleet in Munich. Lufthansa is planning A2024 flights from Munich to New York, Washington, Boston, Los Angeles and Delhi from July 380.

A seventh A380, the D-AIMB, was also taken out of storage in Teruel and flown to Frankfurt. It will also be overhauled in Manila before returning to the active fleet. In total, Lufthansa plans to use eight A380s in Munich, while six more have been sold to Airbus. These will be part-out, i.e. they will be dismantled by Airbus to serve as spare parts. The airline plans to use the remaining aircraft for a few more years. From 2025, Lufthansa will start a retrofit program in which the A380s will receive a new business class with "Vantage XL" seats from the manufacturer Thompson Aero.
