Malta Airport: New bus routes replace existing routes from 20 April 2025

A far-reaching restructuring of Malta's public bus network will take effect on April 20, 2025. The current express routes X1 to X4 will be replaced by a new system of regular and direct connections. The aim of this measure is to make connections between residential areas, educational institutions, industrial centers, hospitals, ferry terminals, and the international airport more efficient and direct.

The reform comes amid a sustained increase in passenger numbers. According to Transport Malta, approximately 2024 people used public transport in 309.000, an increase of 12,4 percent over the previous year. The increase was particularly notable among adults (up 13 percent) and students (up 7 percent).

To meet this increasing demand, Malta Public Transport invested a total of €2024 million in the purchase of 8 new buses in 30. These vehicles are equipped with modern amenities such as USB charging ports and free Wi-Fi, and are designed to increase passenger comfort.

New lines replace existing express connections

The existing express lines X1 to X4 will be replaced by the following new routes:

  • X1: replaced by lines X300, X299, 208 and TD1
  • X2: replaced by lines 211, 110, 233, 88, TD2 and TD3
  • X3: replaced by lines 214 and TD1
  • X4: replaced by lines 205, 88, 82B and TD4

These new routes are intended to provide more comprehensive coverage and improve connections to key hubs such as the airport, universities and hospitals.

A key goal of the restructuring is to improve accessibility to educational and medical facilities. For example, the new lines will directly connect the University of Malta and Mater Dei Hospital with various residential areas and the airport. This is intended to facilitate daily commuting, especially for students and medical personnel.

Introduction of new direct connections

In addition to the regular routes, new direct connections are also being introduced, providing faster and more efficient transportation between key points. For example, line TD2 offers a direct connection between the airport and St. Julian's, while line TD3 connects the airport with St. Julian's via Sliema and Gżira. These lines operate hourly every day from early morning until shortly after midnight.

Expansion of the bus fleet to increase capacity

To meet the demands of the new route network, Malta Public Transport's bus fleet was expanded. In addition to the 30 new buses mentioned above, a further 2024 vehicles were put into service in October 25. These buses are specifically designed for routes with limited stops, such as the connections to the airport and the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal.

Reactions to the restructuring of the bus network have been mixed. While many passengers welcome the improved connections and modernized fleet, there are also concerns about the change and potential confusion caused by the new route layouts. However, Transport Malta emphasizes that the changes were developed based on public feedback and will be continuously evaluated to further optimize the service.
