A few days ago it was announced that in the 2023/24 winter flight schedule, some routes from Germany that were previously marketed by Condor as their own flights were to be handed over to its sister company Marabu. This triggered outraged reactions from affected passengers.

Since Marabu Airlines does not have its own reservation system, but relies on its sister company Condor, which acts as a so-called general sales agent, the Aviation.Direct editorial team has received an enormous number of emails in the last few days from customers of the German holiday airline complain that they had explicitly and consciously booked with Condor and were now confronted by email telling them that they should not fly to the Canary Islands with the airline they had actually booked, but with the Estonian Marabu. The Bulgarian European Air Charter operates the flights from Stuttgart.

At first glance, the allegations of the affected passengers are quite serious, because one affected person writes that they had booked German quality with a German airline for a lot of money and would now get “something inferior, old from Eastern Europe” without being asked. If he and his family had wanted to fly with a “shabby low-cost airline, then the competition would have been even cheaper.”

Furthermore, numerous Condor customers complain that the additional services they have already paid for, such as luggage, seat reservations or the transport of dogs, have been canceled by Condor and that they have to “re-book these with Marabu”. However, the service center of the German holiday airline is not able to do this and, according to those affected, says that you should try again shortly before departure.

Cancellation of the contract free of charge is not always possible

From a legal perspective, the fact that Condor is rebooking to its sister company Marabu Airlines is not that easy for passengers. Although a transport contract from A to B has been concluded with Condor, the airline is not obliged to actually provide this service itself. They can commission a subcontractor to actually carry out the work at any time, but they remain the contractual partner of the traveller. There is a very extensive clause on this subject in the General Conditions of Carriage.

The Air Passenger Rights Ordinance also stipulates that airlines must provide alternative transport if they cannot fulfill the contract of carriage themselves - for whatever reason. The well-known 14-day period is only relevant for possible compensation payments, but not for the right to alternative transport. Strictly speaking, the rebookings that Condor makes on Marabu Airlines are substitute transportation.

The question of whether this is such a significant unilateral change to the contract that entitles you to withdraw free of charge with a full refund is not so easy to answer. It depends on the specific individual case, because, for example, you could certainly cancel if you purchased a business class ticket from Condor but are rebooked to Marabu economy class. This would be a significant contractual change that those affected certainly do not have to accept. Significant changes to flight times could also be an opportunity for a possible withdrawal from the contract. However, it always depends on the individual case, so you should seek advice from consumer protection advice centers and/or a lawyer if you do not agree with the rebooking to Marabu Airlines.

“Due to capacity bottlenecks, Condor resorts to Marabu”

Some allegations made by its customers were sent to the airline Condor in a summarized and anonymized form and at the same time a number of questions were asked. When asked exactly what role Condor plays at Marabu, a spokeswoman replied as follows: “Marabu is part of the Attestor company. To found Marabu, Attestor relied on two partners right from the start: on the operational side it was the Nordica Aviation Group; on the commercial side, Condor, whose majority owner is also Attestor, was a sister airline with sales as general sales agent hired. Condor therefore sells Marabu flights on their behalf via its own, already successfully implemented sales structures. This is standard practice for many airlines.”

The media representative explains the conversion of the affected flights from Condor to Marabu to Aviation.Direct as follows: “Due to capacity bottlenecks caused by the fleet rollover at Condor, Condor is using Marabu capacity in the winter flight schedule 2023/24, which begins in November. in order to offer a stable flight schedule despite the ambitious renewal of the entire fleet. After the entire long-haul fleet has been replaced by the beginning of 2024, the short- and medium-haul fleet will also be modernized immediately afterwards. A fleet rollover of this size and in this short period of time demands everything from the Condor organization on the ground and in the air, especially when it comes to retraining all flying personnel on the new aircraft.

When asked why the flights were initially sold as Condor connections but were later switched to its sister company Marabu Airlines, the company replied as follows: “The publication of Marabu's winter flight schedule was postponed due to the airline's teething problems at the beginning of the summer delayed. As general sales agent for our sister airline, we have of course followed Marabu's operational performance over the last few months and also proactively supported the implementation of solutions, for example as part of the task force that was created at Marabu, in order to sustainably improve punctuality and stability. These measures are now bearing fruit and we are convinced that the focus that Axel Schefe as CEO will continue to place on Marabu's operational performance in the coming weeks will contribute to further improving flight schedule stability. This is particularly important with regard to the autumn holidays, but of course also for the winter.”

When asked about the problem regarding additional services, the Condor spokeswoman explains: “Due to the significant improvement in punctuality and the foreseeable continued stability in the flight schedule, it has now been possible to determine which Marabu capacities Condor will reliably rely on in the winter flight schedule. This decision was made later than usual to reliably ensure that travelers do not have to undergo another schedule change. Travelers are currently being proactively informed by Condor that their flight is operated by Marabu. For this purpose, fixed processes are stored in the systems. However, due to a systemic error, some bookings resulted in an error in any special services booked. It may therefore happen that customers are first informed about the use of Marabu and then about the special service, such as seat reservation, which is simply transferred to the flight with Marabu if Marabu offers it. If this is not the case, for example when transporting animals, travelers will automatically receive their money refunded. Travelers who want to cancel their flight completely can do so free of charge. Guests can contact Condor customer service for all matters relating to the booking.

So, Condor sells flights in its own name, then you suddenly realize that you also have a fleet renewal program running and, what a drama, you can't fly the flights you've already sold yourself, but have to have them done with a dubious Eastern European flight provider?
    Whoever wants to believe...
I rather suspect that if Condor had made it clear from the start that Marabu flies instead of Condor, the booking numbers would have been significantly worse and I also doubt whether you can charge as much money for an ominous Marabu flight as for a Condor flight.
I also suspect that this approach has something to do with the fact that Condor has not yet completely paid off loans from the Federal Republic of Germany and as long as these have not been paid off, you are of course not allowed to expand the market with this money.
So the customers are shifted to Marabu, so Condor has some of the contingent limited by the FRG credit free again, which can now probably be marketed more lucratively on long-haul routes.
In my view, this is nothing other than ruthless business dealings at the expense of customers, and I see the fleet renewal program as an argument as a purely unbelievable protective claim.
I therefore also see this approach as very dubious and will avoid this company for this reason.
I book something and I want to keep it. If something else is foisted on me, then I simply see it as a breach of contract and I won't fly with airlines that breach their contract.
I simply have the fear that “whoever does something like this might also do completely different things”.
    No thanks!

"They let the flights from Stuttgart be carried out by the Bulgarian European Air Charter."

Yes, exactly... On Thursday, the mail came from the tour operator that in December from Stuttgart to Fuerteventura it was not Condor that was flying, but Marabu. After further research I ended up exactly there: Marabu is not flying, but the flight was passed on again to the Bulgarian wet leasing company European Air Charter.

When I “transferred” to Marabu, I asked myself what was left of the business class I had booked with Condor… and now with European Air charter:

    Check-in the night before
    heavier suitcases and hand luggage
    free center seat
    menu choice
    Priority at security check/boarding/baggage handling
(I'm not even talking about the pillows and welcome gift...)

Does anyone know what will actually remain of this?

Informed by the tour operator (who currently only provides information about rebooking to Marabu), it says succinctly: "Of course, the booked business class will remain."

In the best case, there will be a free middle seat. Stuttgart does not offer an evening check-in with either Marabu or European Air Charter. So that's where it starts...
Whether that justifies the extra price paid for a Condor Business Class is very doubtful...

  • M.K , 4. September 2023 @ 15: 11

Unbelievable‼️‼️‼️ We are also affected 😠😡😡 Paid an extra charge to fly back and forth to Fuerteventura with Condor. The surcharge is non-refundable. And we go back with Marabu. 🙈🙈🙈 This will be the last time with Condor!!!!!!!! Then prefer Eurowings for the next flights. I'm excited to see what awaits us at the end of the vacation. So far we have only heard and read BAD things about Marabu! We are pissed off and disappointed. 🙌

The legal side is different, as is the background, but for the mass of German customers, “where C is written on it, C must also be inside”. Once the trust you have just built is ruined, it will last for a long time.

We (2 people) are also affected. Booked flight, Business Flexi, Munich Fuerteventura in January 2024. Due to a change in the departure schedule, we realized that it must be a different airline. It is an outrage to be rebooked to another airline without notification. The question is whether the special services we pay for are even possible at Marabu. We paid a lot and now have to make do with a low-cost airline.
We will never book Condor again.

  • W Koopmann , 4. September 2023 @ 21: 53

We had the same problem on flights from Hamburg to Fuerteventura in November and January.
We had booked Business Flex. Canceled all flights and got the money back without hesitation.
We have now booked the flights with Eurowings. Although it costs the same (without food, drink and lounge entry), we will hopefully fly with German aircraft and a German crew. Condor lost a lot of credit with this campaign. I will also book my next flights with Eurowings again.
    NEVER AGAIN CONDOR!

  • B. Seipel , 5. September 2023 @ 00: 38

It's unbelievable We also booked business class with Condor! Munich-Fuerteventura, direct flight.
On August 29.08th we received an email that we had been rebooked to Marabu!
At least the time is right from Munich. On the return flight, Marabu does a Canary Islands victory lap to land in Gran Canaria. It will then be a long flight time!
No information from Condor or the European subsidy subsidiary Marabu.
By the way, Condor, Attestor, Marabu have the same investors and board members. huh? But true.
Our hope lies in the new CEO who has switched from Condor to Maribu.
But honestly! Which CEO in the last 25 years, regardless of industry, has had a positive impact on the company other than filling his pockets?
    Unfortunately I don't know a single one.
    Our hope dies last.

  • tossi, 5. September 2023 @ 08: 50

We deliberately booked Condor to avoid the cramped and uncomfortable Eurowings planes. Then the transfer to Marabu. After half a marital quarrel because of this and the expected complications at Marabu (no staff in HH, no service, old planes, delays, loss of luggage, stopovers, ..) the vacation is already ruined. That's cheating! This must be made public, for example, in the case of a third-party market on TV or similar! Didn't Condor tap into millions of taxpayers' money during the Corona phase? So you pay twice and get scammed...

  • Hans Heinrich Petersen, 5. September 2023 @ 10: 49

This was definitely the last booking with Condor…….

  • Bean , 5. September 2023 @ 14: 07

    Incredible !!!
As in previous years, always with Condor to Gran Canaria.
Now for the first time business class booked with Condor! I'm curious what the extra performance
    remains. (luggage, food, etc.)
Luckily the flight times have existed.until now!!
    We'll try anyway.

This is the biggest shot in oven. With Marabu Airlines, the buck becomes a gardener. just because of the flight safety in the cockpit and in the cabin as well as the maintenance of the aircraft leaves a lot open. if I split up the entire staff, then not much is left in the individual divisions. Especially the maintenance of
Aircraft requires a certain number of personnel: maintenance and repair of the machine. I have serious doubts about that.

  • Peter, 5. September 2023 @ 19: 12

Condor seems to mutate into a disgusting rip-off.
Luckily I read that just early enough to book our upcoming flight to Mexico with another airline.
It's a shame, I actually liked this line, but the way they treat customers is just not right.
    Luckily there are alternatives.

  • CHRISMuc, 5. September 2023 @ 21: 03

CONDOR has become a “FRAUD and AZOCKE” airline! Absolutely UNSERIOUS!!! 🤮👎✈ Quality Condor flights are sold! Then you end up with these inferior junk airlines like LEAVE Airlines, Nordica, SkyUp...🤮👎 The service level here is "ZERO"....booked services via Condor are never available with these junk airlines!!! Business class NEVER exists on these “junk airlines”!! CONDOR are “RIP-OFFERS”!!…Boycott Condor!!!…Normally you would have to report Condor for “intentional fraud”!!!!…

  • john , 6. September 2023 @ 09: 15

Building a good reputation takes many years, but destroying a good reputation happens very quickly, as Condor has just made shockingly clear.
I wonder if those in charge think this would have no consequences? Maybe extreme low-cost airlines don't need to pay attention to their customers - cheap always seems to work. But Condor's prices are not cheap. Now if I book Condor and I don't get what I booked, business class, or even get rebooked on some dubious line without asking me, well, I'll take the whole thing to the lawyer and book on another line. It should be clear that from this moment on Condor will never be considered for further bookings again.
This experience is of course shared extensively with the entire business and private circle of acquaintances.
Munich is in this regard. a village!

  • Mike Wolpert , 6. September 2023 @ 20: 57

We received a message from Altours that our outbound flight times to Fuerteventura had been changed. It was also true that we should start from Hamburg an hour later. By the way, we were able to read in the app that it was no longer Condor that was flying us there, but Marabu. Incredible. Luckily we still had the option of free cancellation. I did the same and booked the trip again with Tui. Now we fly from Hanover, but I am guaranteed a good German airline. We always enjoyed flying with the Condor, just because of the good staff. But never again.

    • Peter, 7. September 2023 @ 10: 51

I wouldn't fly with TUI either, because TUI flies with Boeing 737Max. More than 300 people have already died in 2 crashes with this type of aircraft.
In relevant forums you will find enough information about the frightening background regarding Boeing's incomprehensible omissions. I consider the 737Max to be technically dubious and will never (!) fly this type of aircraft because of safety concerns.
I'm not sure, but I think the 737Max is only allowed to fly in Europe with a special permit from EASA.

  • ute , 8. September 2023 @ 11: 02

We are affected too. We set the travel dates to Hurghada in November so that we fly with Condor. Which of course is also much higher in price than a low-cost airline. I'm really shocked what Condor is allowing itself to do. Book expensive flights and then hand them over to low-cost airlines. So dubious!!!

  • yvonne, 8. September 2023 @ 19: 34

Affected by rebooking from Condor Business Class to European Air Charter Economy (according to the Condor booking portal). When I called the “Marabu hotline” I was first told: “You have been downgraded” and when I asked how I should now imagine this, after a few minutes in the queue I was told: it’s all business class – that’s how it is in their system and all services would be retained…..

  • W. Koopmann , 8. September 2023 @ 21: 17

Was also affected by four Condor rebookings. DE (Condor) became DI (Marabu). A little hint:
New flight number means cancellation of the original flight. So the flight was canceled by Condor. In any case, ask for the travel price back and then book it again with another airline if necessary. Worked for me.

  • Schiebel, 9. September 2023 @ 04: 34

Condor was saved by the German taxpayer during Corona with 500 million in state aid. And anyone who books Condor now ends up with Marabu, European Air Charter or similar. Trusting in Condor's good reputation, I booked two flights to Fuerteventura for December 23 and March 24, paid an extra charge for business class and now succinctly rebooked on Marabu and European Air Charter. My booked meals were canceled by Condor. No refund. No check-in the evening before. No seat. What is remarkable is that, despite email notifications of rebookings and cancellations, my flights are still shown in the Condor flight system with the booked seat and meal. Guess the Choas is complete. In the future I will no longer book Condor and will assert my claims for recourse if I do not receive the services booked and paid for. For me the name Condor is ruined.

  • Lucienne Schmall, 11. September 2023 @ 16: 04

I am also affected by the diagonal stitch. I just don't know what I could do because there are no other providers from Hamburg (except Eurowings, which only flies to the Canary Islands for 5 months)
are available and since we live in the very north (Danish border), Hamburg requires the least amount of effort.
That these things are just so possible - on the other hand, you don't have to be surprised, because who can you trust? Nothing and no one!! Fraud everywhere and as long as you live.
Always being at the mercy of this - I've already shared my frustration with Condor - but it won't help or change anything. Eat or die………………..

  • W. Koopmann , 11. September 2023 @ 20: 20

I have rebooked all of my Condor flights to Eurowings. Except for Lanzarote (until the beginning of April), they fly from Hamburg to all Canary Islands all year round. Although some business class amenities are missing (lounge visit, free food and drink on board), priority check-in and a free middle seat can also be booked with Eurowings. Unfortunately, we don't have any alternatives from Hamburg at the moment.

  • Heinz-Günter Grün, 13. September 2023 @ 12: 00

I just spoke on the phone to a flight captain who was employed by Condor until a year ago. He says that if the English investor wants it that way, then it will be done. Condor is no longer what it used to be. When I asked, would you fly with Marabu? “Not in life,” was the short answer. This should give a reason to think…

  • Mathis Röber, 13. September 2023 @ 15: 50

We are also affected by the rebooking and will cancel our trip to Tenerife.
Booked as a package holiday with TUI, with Condor as carrier.
Now adjust your flight to Marabu Airlines or perhaps to an even worse airline.
The fact that TUI supports such behavior is unbelievable, we know from our own experience what people have to endure afterwards. 2023 from Malaga after a cruise with a rebooked return flight (Air Italia)
Instead of going to Hamburg to Berlin with a 5 hour delay, then a bus ride to HH! By the way, also via Tui.
Of course they are not responsible for this, please contact the airline!!! Who booked the flights???
We filed claims via a portal, but nothing has happened to date.
Conclusion: They are all in cahoots, the main thing is to maximize profits and accept everything.
Sit it out, sit it out and you're done. No more traveling with Condor!

  • Stefan Rohe, 14. September 2023 @ 11: 13

We are also affected and will be rebooking to another airline!
Article in Focus-Online – from July 25.07.23th, XNUMX
Engine damage during Marabu flight - pilot did not take alarm seriously
...Something almost happened last Tuesday. A spark plug came loose on the Marabu flight from Malaga to Munich. Hot gas then flowed against the cladding and cables. This resulted in damage to the engine and burn holes in the aircraft's outer paneling. The pilot was warned about an engine fire warning light. He initially considered an emergency landing, but when the light went out again, he decided to continue flying...

We have the return flight from Tenerife to Hamburg on January 14.1th. 24 booked. Now we have been informed that the flight number has changed! No mention of marabou. I googled the flight number and found that we were rebooked on Marabu. A friend works at the airport in Hamburg. She's been telling me about the airline's dire conditions for weeks. The order of the day includes short-term cancellations, unpunctuality with significant flight delays, etc. Unfortunately, we cannot cancel as so far it is only a change in the flight number. We have flown to Tenerife with Condor many times but this will probably be my last booking. I'm upset and angry!

    Hello!
We are also affected and wanted to fly CONDOR from Fuerteventura back to Munich in April. We definitely won't go there with our children after all the reports!
HOW ABOUT A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT? Is anyone already suing by chance?
    Greetings Susanne

  • Kusch-Behlke GABRIELE, 29. October 2023 @ 14: 44

Never again CONDOR!!!! By CHANCE, we saw on the internet that our booked FLIGHT with CONDOR on November 15th, 2023 was simply moved to MARABU!!! WITHOUT letting us know! THIS is PURE FRAUD!!! WE HAVE CANCELLED !

  • Birgit D., 30. October 2023 @ 23: 14

    30.10.2023
Booked Condor, got Marabu! I think that's cheating! In any case, I didn't get the profit from the sale to the low-cost airline refunded! Unbelievable…Condor is destroying itself…..and with government support………
No comfort, no food…..because everyone!!! With a flight of almost 5 hours! I am still shocked.
    Condor – never again!

  • TommyT, 26. December 2023 @ 12: 57

This topic is making waves in the aviation industry. The fact is that Condor is no longer a German company. The European asset manager Attestor owns the majority. Here, several people earn money at the expense of the customers. For an apple and an egg, Condor gives his daughter Marabu, who has exactly 7 planes, the flights that Condor previously had her German customers pay for. And Marabu then passes it on to other cheap fleets for an apple and an egg. By the way, on December 31.12.23st, 58 you can fly from Hamburg to Gran Carnaria with Marabu directly from €10, while Hamburg to Gran Carnaria (172 minutes later) with a Condor stop is available from €XNUMX. The question arises as to why Condor doesn't hand out the money for customers who have definitely booked Condor and were later rebooked to Marabu by Condor? So the decision remains with the customer as to whether he should take a low-cost airline next time, which will then be clearly cheaper.

  • I , 15. January 2024 @ 08: 21

Absolute disgrace. I can only advise everyone to avoid Condor.

  • SE, 27. October 2023 @ 17: 17
