Modernized security checks put into operation at Munich Airport

After a three-year renovation phase, Munich Airport officially opened the modernized security screening lanes in Terminal 2. Just in time for the start of the Easter holidays, the Southern Bavaria Aviation Authority put the 15 screening lanes into operation. The new technology, featuring CT scanners, is intended to speed up processes for passengers and staff while simultaneously enhancing security standards.

The new devices offer travelers increased convenience, as up to four people can check their hand luggage for inspection at the same time. Electronic devices and liquids no longer need to be unpacked separately. Furthermore, the CT scanners ensure more precise detection of explosives through 100% automated analysis and a three-dimensional representation of the baggage contents. This simplifies the work of security personnel and should lead to fewer follow-up checks, thus saving time for passengers.

Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter, Airport CEO Jost Lammers, and Lufthansa Airlines CEO Jens Ritter, among others, were present at the commissioning of the new systems and tested the new screening lanes. The Free State of Bavaria reportedly invested over 45 million euros in modernizing security checks at Munich Airport. Similar upgrades are planned for Nuremberg and Memmingen Airports. Three CT screening lanes were put into operation in Munich Airport's Terminal 2023 in May 1. Further screening lanes are scheduled to be modernized there by summer 2026.
