Munich Airport received the “Best Airport Staff in Europe” and “Best Airport in Central Europe” awards at the World Airport Awards. These come from the Skytrax organization and were handed over this week as part of the Terminal Expo taking place in Frankfurt am Main.

“We are particularly proud that our employees are the best in Europe. This shows that Munich Airport is also perceived as particularly hospitable internationally. The awards are recognition for the commitment and hard work of our entire airport team,” said Managing Director Jost Lammers.

There are currently around 33.000 employees working at the Bavarian airport. These work either directly at the airport company or at service providers, airport companies, in shops or at rental car companies. With regard to the staff shortage that occurred after the corona pandemic, the operating company emphasizes that it has since hired around 1.500 additional employees.

In October 2023, Skytrax carried out an audit, which resulted in Munich Airport's so-called five-star status being renewed. Munich Airport is particularly pleased with its current award as “Best Airport in Central Europe”. In Europe, apart from Munich, only Rome-Fiumicino and Istanbul-New currently have a five-star rating.

“We congratulate Munich Airport on winning these customer awards for 2024. This is great recognition for the airport’s employees. Munich Airport can be proud to be recognized by its passengers as a leading airport,” said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax.

However, it should also be noted that the Skytrax Awards lost a lot of reputation and credibility some time ago. The background is that Lufthansa was only made a so-called five-star carrier because of an announcement that was ultimately not implemented. This caused astonishment in the industry. Some time later, Skytrax tried to save what could still be saved and withdrew Lufthansa's fifth star. The airline reacted extremely bluntly to this. Nevertheless, Skytrax's campaign has permanently damaged the reputation and credibility of these awards and numerous airports and carriers are now refraining from advertising with Skytrax stars.
