Munich Airport counted around 2022 million passengers between January and September 23. In the third quarter of the current year, about 74 percent of the pre-crisis volume was reached. Management expects around 30 million travelers for the year as a whole.
In the first nine months, Germany's second largest airport had around ten million more passengers than in the previous year. The busiest months so far were July, August and September 2022. In the traditionally strong summer months, there were around 10,2 million passengers, which was around 74 percent of the volume before the corona pandemic. If the current development continues, Flughafen München GmbH expects more than 30 million passengers by the end of the year.
“Air transport demand has returned with enormous momentum this year. A very large number of people have taken the opportunity to finally be able to fly again. This is very good news for our entire industry, because it confirms our assessment that air traffic will continue to play its important role as an indispensable mode of transport for global mobility in the future," says Munich Managing Director Jost Lammers.
The number of take-offs and landings rose to around 2022 from January to September 212.000. This is a doubling compared to the same period last year. In the sum of air freight and air mail, the tonnage handled in the first three quarters of the year is 200.000 tons and has thus also almost doubled compared to 2021. The capacity utilization of the aircraft in Munich is currently at a record level: while the aircraft were occupied at an average of 65 percent in the first nine months of last year, this year it was 77 percent again at Bavaria's air traffic hub. A new high of 84,5 percent was achieved in the third quarter.
