New “Path of the Planets” on the Gerlitzen Alpe combines nature experiences, knowledge transfer and digital innovation

The Villach – Faaker See – Ossiacher See tourist region is setting new standards in nature experiences with the new “Path of the Planets” on the sun-drenched Gerlitzen Alpe.

This approximately 2,5-kilometer-long themed trail, located at approximately 1.500 meters above sea level, leads from the Kanzelhöhe parking lot to the solar observatory along the existing Kanzelhöhe circular trail. It takes hikers on a fascinating journey through our solar system, combining traditional learning methods with cutting-edge digital technologies that enable interactive exploration of space right in the Alpine landscape.

A journey through the solar system: Analog meets digital

The "Path of the Planets" on the Gerlitzen Alp is an outstanding example of how nature and technology can be harmoniously combined to create an enriching experience for visitors of all ages. Eleven large-format panels, embedded in the impressive mountain scenery of Carinthia, form the backbone of the themed trail. They convey in-depth facts about our solar system, the eight planets, the asteroid belt, and our central star, the sun. These analog information carriers are not static, but are complemented by interactive elements that encourage participation and discovery. These include a rotating model of the planets that illustrates the relationships in the solar system, as well as quizzes that playfully test acquired knowledge.

However, the heart of the innovative concept is formed by two Augmented reality experiencesThese digital extensions bring the solar system to life directly on the smartphone, without the need to download an additional app. Augmented reality works conveniently via simple QR codes that visitors can scan to choose between two specific digital AR experiences: one is dedicated to the four gas planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune), while the other focuses on the rocky planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars). This user-friendly accessibility on all common smartphones is a decisive advantage and lowers the barrier to using the digital content.

“Hirschi” and the Mars Rover: Playful knowledge transfer in AR

As a digital narrator, the animated mascot "Hirschi" guides visitors through the virtual world of the solar system. The 3D figure of "Hirschi" can be placed directly in the terrain, creating an immersive experience that is particularly appealing to younger visitors. The sound recordings for the mascot were created by the Klagenfurt-based agency radio:works, emphasizing the project's regional roots.

Another interactive element within the AR experience is an additional integrated model of the Mars RoversThis allows for playful experimentation and simultaneously provides insight into current space research. Such playful approaches are not only fun but also stimulate interest in complex scientific topics. The experience is intended to stimulate interest in the full range of on-site offerings and encourage visitors to explore the entire "Path of the Planets."

The technical implementation of the augmented reality component was carried out in collaboration with the Austrian company Mixed Reality AI under the direction of AR expert Andy Gstoll. This demonstrates the expertise of Austrian companies in the field of modern digitalization solutions. The technical supervision and support of the entire project by the Karl-Franzens University of Graz also ensures the scientific accuracy of the content conveyed.

A flagship project for tourism: harmony of nature and technology

The "Path of the Planets" is considered by those responsible to be a groundbreaking project for the region's tourism development. Mag.a. Veronika Zorn-Jäger, chairwoman of the Gerlitzen Alpe – Ossiacher See Tourism Association, emphasized the objective: "We want to offer our guests activities that are equally exciting, educational, and family-friendly. The 'Path of the Planets' is a project that further enhances the experiential value of our region and demonstrates how modern technology can blend harmoniously into a natural environment." This statement underscores the effort to appeal to a broad audience while simultaneously enhancing the quality of the tourism offering.

Georg Overs, Managing Director of Region Villach Tourismus GmbH, added to this perspective and emphasized the importance of digitalization in tourism: "With the 'Path of the Planets', we demonstrate how digitalization can work in tourism – as an experience enhancer, not as an end in itself. Our goal is to combine nature, education, and technology in such a way that it creates added value for guests and locals. The Gerlitzen Alpe is thus not only an adventure space, but also an innovation space for modern tourism development." This vision positions the Gerlitzen Alpe as a pioneer in the integration of education and technology into tourism offerings. The synergy between digital innovation and the impressive natural scenery is intended to sustainably strengthen the region's appeal.

The Gerlitzen Alpe – Ossiacher See: Diversity in a small space

The new "Path of the Planets" is an attractive addition to the already diverse summer offerings in the region around the Gerlitzen Alpe and Lake Ossiach. The Gerlitzen Alpe is known for its many hours of sunshine and offers impressive alpine scenery that is easily accessible. In just 30 minutes, visitors can comfortably travel from the lakeshore to the summit via cable car, where a wealth of activities await.

In addition to the new themed trail, guests can enjoy attractive hikes of varying difficulty levels, offering impressive views. For adventure seekers, there's a high ropes course and summer tubing. Families will find entertainment at the children's bike park and with mini electric scooters. The Gerlitzen Alpe is also known for its optimal thermal conditions, making it a popular destination for paragliders. Mountain bikers can let off steam on the challenging PROlitzen Trail. Last but not least, the region attracts visitors with its diverse range of mountain hut cuisine, offering regional specialties, freshly prepared food, and warm hospitality. This combination of nature experiences, sporting activities, educational opportunities, and culinary delights makes the Villach – Faaker See – Ossiacher See region an attractive travel destination for a wide variety of interests. The integration of digital elements such as augmented reality helps to expand the traditional nature experience in innovative ways and appeal to new target groups.
