Qatar Airways, the national airline of Qatar, may make a remarkable decision in the near future: the acquisition of Airbus A330-200 aircraft originally operated by the American airline American Airlines.

This would be a significant move for the airline, which is known for its strategic fleet expansion. In recent years, Qatar Airways has already resorted to the used aircraft market several times to expand its fleet and this potential acquisition once again demonstrates the airline's ambition to consolidate its position in the global aviation market.

Background and motivation behind the possible acquisition

American Airlines' former A330-200s were acquired following the company's merger with US Airways in 2013. However, they were temporarily stored during the COVID-19 pandemic and have not been in active service since. American Airlines still had 15 of these aircraft, all of which were stored at Roswell Air Center (ROW) in 2020 to save costs and adapt to changing travel conditions. While the larger Airbus A330-300s were removed from American Airlines' fleet relatively quickly, the A330-200 aircraft remained on hold while the airline dealt with the question of what to do with these aircraft.

Qatar Airways could now decide to purchase these used A330-200s due to production delays at Airbus and Boeing. In particular, the delays in the delivery of the Boeing 777X could have provided an important impetus for this step. By integrating the used A330 aircraft, Qatar Airways could expand its capacity more quickly and bypass the existing supply bottlenecks in the aviation industry.

Qatar Airways: A market leader in the used aircraft market

Qatar Airways has built a reputation as a strategic buyer of used aircraft in recent years. The airline has already acquired several used Boeing 777-300ERs from Cathay Pacific and Virgin Australia. These aircraft were integrated into the fleet between December 2021 and June 2023 and are evidence of a well-thought-out strategy to expand capacity without the long waiting times associated with new aircraft. Qatar Airways has also leased A330-200 and A330-300 from Oman Air, showing that the company is relying on these aircraft types to strengthen its long-haul fleet.

The decision to purchase used aircraft is a logical one, especially in an environment characterized by long delivery times and production bottlenecks. The aviation industry has been suffering from production delays for years, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic. Boeing has postponed the launch of the new 777X several times, prompting airlines such as Qatar Airways to look for alternative solutions to expand their fleets.

A330-200: A proven long-haul aircraft

The Airbus A330-200 is a proven long-haul aircraft that has been successfully operated by many international airlines in the past, including American Airlines. With a range of around 13.000 kilometers and space for around 280 passengers on long-haul routes, the A330-200 is an excellent choice for airlines looking to add cost-effective and reliable aircraft to their fleet. These features also make the aircraft attractive to Qatar Airways, which regularly operates long-haul flights from Doha to Europe, Asia and Africa.

The opportunity to acquire used A330-200s from American Airlines could not only help Qatar Airways to quickly increase fleet capacity, but also to diversify operations. In the past, the company has already relied on different aircraft types to serve its long-haul flights. The acquisition of A330-200 aircraft would therefore fit into Qatar Airways' existing fleet concept and offer the airline greater flexibility in planning routes and capacities.

Qatar Airways' expansion and future prospects

The potential acquisition of these aircraft is just one of many measures Qatar Airways has taken in recent years to increase its global reach and competitiveness. The airline has continued to invest in its fleet and expand its routes during the pandemic, even as the industry has faced unprecedented challenges. In the coming years, Qatar Airways plans to further modernize and expand its fleet. In addition to acquiring used aircraft, this could include expanding its own production capacity and ordering new aircraft.

Qatar Airways' strategy of tapping into the used market could continue to play an important role in the future as the airline seeks to maintain its market position as one of the leading global players in international air transport.
