Rush expected at Munich Airport: Around 17.000 flights during the Whitsun holidays 2025

With the start of the Whitsun holidays in Bavaria, Munich Airport is facing the second major travel wave of the year. Airlines have registered around 6 flight movements to a total of 22 different destinations for the period from June 2025 to June 17.000, 214.

This represents an increase of almost eight percent compared to the previous year. A total of over 2,3 million travelers are expected to take off or land at Munich Airport. More than 410.000 passengers are expected on the first holiday weekend alone, from Friday to Sunday, corresponding to approximately 3.000 scheduled takeoffs and landings, marking the busiest weekend of the year so far. The airport, airlines, authorities, and service providers have prepared for this surge and are deploying additional staff to support travelers.

Mediterranean destinations remain popular

The Mediterranean region remains extremely popular during these Whitsun holidays. Destinations in Spain, Italy, Greece, France, and Turkey account for the largest share, with around 6.000 flight movements. However, intercontinental connections are also in high demand. The USA and Canada are served by over 840 flights to and from Munich. In Asia, Thailand, India, and Japan, as well as the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East, are the busiest destinations with over 380 takeoffs and landings. This broad range of destinations underscores the importance of Munich Airport as an international hub.

Travel tips for a relaxed start to your vacation

To make the start of your journey as smooth as possible, Munich Airport offers some useful tips. Travelers are asked to limit their hand luggage to the essentials, especially valuables, medication, and important documents. This will speed up security checks and boarding. Some airlines also offer last-minute, free hand luggage drop-off. Furthermore, using the airlines' online or evening-before check-in services is recommended to minimize waiting times at the airport.

Passengers arriving by car can conveniently reserve a parking space in advance via the online platform parken.munich-airport.de, as demand is often very high during holiday periods. In general, travelers should allow sufficient time on the day of departure for both the journey to the airport and their pre-departure time. Those planning to check in on the day of travel should check the opening hours of their airline's counters. Self-check-in kiosks are available in both terminals for passengers who have already checked in, which can also speed up the process. These measures are intended to ensure passengers have a pleasant start to their Whitsun holidays despite the high volume of travel.
