Russia is increasing its use of the Tupolev Tu-214 as a replacement for Western aircraft that are no longer available due to sanctions.

After the resumption of production in 2022, the state-owned aircraft manufacturer United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has signed a letter of intent with S7 Airlines for the delivery of 100 improved Tu-214s.

The model, originally developed in 1989 as the successor to the Tu-154, is to be further optimized by a new innovation center. Among other things, the aim is to reduce weight, increase range and make production more efficient. The airline Aeroflot, which also ordered 2022 Tu-40s in 214, plans to convert its order into jets of the newer Yakovlev MS-21 model.
