Spanish government takes action against airline surcharges

The Spanish Ministry of Consumer Protection is taking action against several airlines who charge fees for carrying hand luggage in the IATA standard format. Those affected include Volotea, Easyjet, Vueling and Ryanair.

According to the authority, the fact that extra fees are charged if you want to have underage or physically challenged passengers sitting next to you is also being examined. The refusal to accept cash at airport counters should also be checked.

The Ministry is of the opinion that the carriers would advertise with low prices, but would exclude services that may be expected to be included and ask for an extra fee. One sees possible violations of the Spanish consumer protection law. Fines of at least 10.000 euros and a maximum of 1.000.000 euros can be imposed per case.
