Special luggage: Holidaymakers can incur high costs

The travel tech company AirHelp informs travelers about the challenges and rules of transporting sports equipment on an airplane. Whether it's a surfboard or a bicycle, for many German vacationers, physical activity is part of their summer vacation.

Proper preparation for transporting such equipment is crucial, as different airlines have different policies. Information about permitted equipment, weight restrictions and possible fees is important, as AirHelp points out.

Pedro Miguel Madaleno, legal expert at AirHelp, explains that if equipment is lost, travelers should first rent the items they need and then claim the cost back from the airline. If the sports equipment does not turn up within 21 days, in addition to the rental cost, the value of the lost luggage can be reimbursed upon presentation of a proof of purchase. However, purchasing new equipment at the airline's expense is not common.
