A recent survey by the Willhaben marketplace among 2.089 users in Austria shows that a large proportion of the population pays attention to sustainability when on holiday.

The study, conducted in July 2024, reveals that 60 percent of respondents would either always or occasionally forego air travel in order to travel in a more environmentally friendly way. This willingness is particularly pronounced among women and people from Tyrol, Carinthia and Vienna. The tendency to reduce air travel increases with age, with older respondents tending to forego flights more than younger generations.

In addition to reducing air travel, 69,7 percent of respondents emphasize that they pay attention to sustainability when on vacation. Travelers consider waste avoidance (68,1 percent), energy and water consumption (44,4 percent), sustainable food and drink (40,2 percent) and the choice of vacation destination (36,6 percent) to be particularly important. Men and people with higher incomes are less inclined to consider their carbon footprint when on vacation.
