Terminal expansion at Munich Airport nears completion

Advertising

The expansion of Terminal 1 at Munich Airport is progressing according to plan and is nearing completion. The new pier will create a modern terminal for non-Schengen traffic at Terminal 1, expanding the airport's capacity by up to six million passengers annually. This roughly corresponds to the annual passenger volume of an airport such as Hanover.

The delivery and installation of all passenger boarding bridge elements is largely complete. The interior of the building is being gradually completed: The CT scanners for the security checks are currently being installed, and the gates with the boarding kiosks and the baggage claim system have already been installed. The planned dining facilities, shopping areas, and passenger waiting areas will be completed in the coming weeks.

Bavaria's Finance Minister and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) emphasized the importance of the project, which further expands the airport's capacity and attractiveness as a "gateway to the world" for Bavaria and is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Free State. Jost Lammers, Chairman of the Management Board of FMG, emphasized that it will not only create additional capacity but also achieve a new level of quality and comfort for passengers.

The new pier extends over a length of approximately 360 meters on the west apron and, including an area in Module B of Terminal 1, covers approximately 95.000 square meters. It can accommodate up to twelve small aircraft or six wide-body aircraft simultaneously. Modern check-in areas with centralized security checks using CT technology, spacious waiting areas, and commercial areas will be built on six levels, three of which are dedicated to passenger processes. FMG invested a total of €665 million in this project. Commissioning is scheduled for the first half of 2026 following a trial period.
