Türkiye introduces new compensation scheme for airline passengers

Turkey has reformed its passenger rights and now grants financial compensation for significant flight delays. Since the end of last year, airlines have been obliged to pay compensation of 100 euros for delays of more than three hours on domestic flights. For international flights, the amount of compensation depends on the flight distance and ranges from 250 euros to 600 euros.

With this regulation, Turkey is following EU Regulation 261/2004, which stipulates comparable compensation claims for passengers in the European Union. Legal experts view the introduction of the new regulation positively, but point out that the practical implementation in Turkey is still under development. The exact handling by courts and authorities will only become clear over time.

Travellers are advised to carefully check their claims in the event of flight disruptions and consider both Turkish and EU regulations. The air passenger rights portal Skycoop stresses that it is advisable for passengers to actively assert their rights in the event of problems in order to benefit from the new compensation regulations.
