Unruly PAX on Delta flight: FAA investigates incident after bites and attacks

An incident on a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles on March 17, 2025, is causing a stir. A male passenger was restrained by the aircraft's crew after allegedly biting another passenger and hitting other passengers. The incident occurred on flight DL501, operated by an Airbus A350-900, and has renewed discussion about the increasing incidence of disruptive behavior in aviation.

Delta Air Lines Flight DL501 departed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) as scheduled at 10:28 a.m. and landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 11:45 a.m. local time. However, an unexpected incident occurred during the flight when a passenger became aggressive. According to reports from the LA Fire Department and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), after landing, information was received that the passenger first bit another passenger and then struck several other passengers.

The aircraft crew reacted promptly and secured the aggressive passenger until landing. He was then taken away by authorities and taken to the hospital for psychological evaluation. The injured passenger also received medical attention.

The FAA's response and possible penalties

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that it will now investigate the incident to determine whether criminal or civil penalties will be imposed on the aggressive passenger. According to an FAA statement, the flight was completed safely after the crew reported the incident. In such cases, the passenger's behavior can lead to significant legal consequences, including hefty fines or even criminal charges.

The FAA has repeatedly emphasized in the past that disruptive behavior on flights will not be tolerated. The agency investigates all such incidents and, if necessary, refers the passenger to law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, which investigates particularly serious cases. For the incident on Flight DL501, the passenger could face a fine of up to $37.000. Multiple penalties could be imposed if the incident involves multiple violations. Such behavior could also result in restrictions on the use of TSA PreCheck and a ban from the airline in question.

The increase in incidents involving restless passengers

Unruly passengers have become an increasingly serious problem for the aviation industry in recent years. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), there was one unruly passenger incident per 2023 flights worldwide in 480—a significant increase from one incident per 2022 flights in 568. Such incidents have increased particularly since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, as many passengers have become stressed or even aggressive due to the ongoing strain on the aviation industry, exacerbated by disruptions to air traffic and overcrowded flights.

The FAA recorded a total of 2024 reported incidents of disruptive passengers in 2.102, a slight increase compared to the previous year. By mid-March 2025, 311 such incidents had already been reported. The spectrum of disruptive behavior ranges from physical violence against other passengers and crew members to verbal attacks and ignoring instructions from flight crew.

Another incident that made global headlines occurred in November 2021, when the FBI and the FAA established an information-sharing protocol to better track these incidents and prosecute perpetrators. The focus is on working with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI, which then initiate criminal prosecutions when necessary.

Economic consequences for airlines

The consequences of incidents involving disruptive passengers are not only dramatic for the passengers and the airlines involved, but also economically significant. In April 2024, Ryanair had to pay over $18.000 for an incident on a flight that had to be diverted due to a disruptive passenger. This incident resulted in additional costs such as excessive fuel consumption, passenger and crew accommodation, and legal fees.

Similarly, in 2023, a Western Australian man was fined nearly $12.000 after forcing a diversion from Perth to Sydney. This incident resulted in an expensive return flight to Perth, including the cost of the fuel used and the diversion fees.

These incidents highlight the serious impact of disruptive behavior on air travel and how airlines are increasingly faced with additional financial burdens and logistical challenges.
