Vienna Airport continues to record an impressive growth trajectory, which is reflected in the latest figures for 2024.
Despite challenges posed by increased operating costs, the Flughafen Wien Group was able to significantly improve both its passenger numbers and its financial indicators. In the first three quarters of 2024, the number of passengers in the entire group rose by 9,1% to 31,6 million, with the Vienna site alone recording an increase of 7,2% to 24,1 million passengers. These encouraging results reflect the continuously growing demand for international flights and the revival of the desire to travel.
Stable financial development despite cost pressure
The financial development of Flughafen Wien AG is equally remarkable. Revenue rose by 2024% to EUR 13,3 million in the first three quarters of 792,5. Despite increased operating costs, EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) increased by 10,8% to EUR 368,1 million.
EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) and the profit for the period also increased, with an increase of 14,4% to EUR 268,7 million and 19,4% to EUR 207 million respectively. Malta Airport, in which Flughafen Wien AG has a stake, made a significant contribution to the result, with an increase of EUR 40 million. The Group is thus remaining on a stable growth path and expects sales of over one billion euros, EBITDA of more than EUR 2024 million and a profit for the period of over EUR 400 million for the full year 220.
Record numbers and increased investments
In 2024, Vienna Airport invested heavily in improving and expanding its infrastructure. The total amount of investments for the year is estimated at over 200 million euros. The focus is on the south terminal expansion and the construction of a new hotel, which will be the largest in Lower Austria with 510 rooms and is expected to open in autumn 2025.
With these investments, the airport is responding to the increasing demand and expectations of passengers for a high-quality travel experience. The south terminal extension, which includes an increase in retail and catering space by 10.000 square meters with 30 new outlets, is intended to further increase the attractiveness of the location. The first leases for these new spaces are already being negotiated. These developments will help to consolidate the airport's position as a major hub in Central Europe.
Increasing passenger numbers and future destinations
Passenger numbers at Vienna Airport have developed impressively and already exceed the level before the Corona crisis. In October 2024, almost 3 million passengers used Vienna Airport, which corresponds to an increase of 7,8% compared to the same month last year and is even 3,7% above the level of October 2019.
Destinations in Western Europe and long-haul flights to Asia were particularly in demand and are again showing a clear upward trend. The airport company expects more than 2024 million passengers at the Vienna location and over 30 million across the entire group for the whole of 39.
Positive prospects and sustainable growth
Vienna Airport is looking to the future with optimism. The good business development is underpinned by new partnerships and strategic investments. The establishment of the TUI Austria headquarters and the opening of the new hotel in AirportCity are just some of the measures that are intended to help strengthen the location. In addition to the growing number of passengers, it is above all the long-haul flights that play an important role in expanding the offer. The new connections to Asia in particular offer growth opportunities. This is also reflected in the increasing number of flight movements and the increased freight volume. In October 2024 alone, 21.824 flight movements were recorded, which corresponds to an increase of 6,3%.
Finally, it should be mentioned that the airport continues to show stable and growth-oriented development despite rising costs and the challenges of the geopolitical situation. Flughafen Wien AG has proven that it can react flexibly to market changes while at the same time creating a solid foundation for future growth. The expectation of exceeding the one billion euro turnover mark for the first time in 2024 underlines the success of this strategy and strengthens the airport as an important hub in Europe.
