The new connection between Vienna and Chengdu, offered by Hainan Airlines, represents a significant step in air connections between Europe and China. Chengdu, the capital of the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, can be reached directly from Austria for the first time. This new route underlines the increasing importance of Vienna Airport as a central hub between the two continents.

The opening of the direct connection was celebrated by important representatives of both countries during a ceremony. Qi Mei, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Austria, Zhuo Zhang, General Manager Austria of Hainan Airlines, and Julian Jäger, CEO of Flughafen Wien AG, emphasized the historic significance of this new connection.

Julian Jäger explained that the route extension plays an important role in positioning Vienna Airport as a hub between Europe and Asia. With Chengdu as Hainan Airlines' second destination after Shenzhen, not only will economic cooperation be strengthened, but the cultural and tourist networking of both countries will also be promoted.

Chengdu is much more than just the home of the famous pandas. With around 20 million inhabitants, the city is one of the most important urban centers in China. It is a leading location for technologies such as electronics, IT and biotechnology and plays a key role in the "Belt and Road" project. The city attracts visitors with its rich history and culture, including the world-famous Sichuan cuisine and sights such as the Leshan Giant Buddha.

Hainan Airlines, China's largest privately owned airline, relies on its excellent reputation. The airline has been awarded a 13-star rating by Skytrax for 5 years, which underlines the company's high quality and customer service. Hainan Airlines' route network includes over 1.400 routes worldwide, including 100 international connections.

Strategic importance for Austria and China

The opening of the direct connection marks a milestone in aviation and economic diplomacy between Austria and China. Zhuo Zhang, General Manager Austria of Hainan Airlines, emphasized that the connection will not only promote trade and economy between the two countries, but will also enable cultural exchange. This is a clear signal of the deep partnership between China and Europe.

The connection to Chengdu is expected to attract not only business travelers, but also tourists who want to discover the diversity and beauty of China. For Austrian companies, it also provides easy access to one of the most dynamic markets in Asia.
