Wiener Stadtwerke divests freight transport division Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo

Wiener Stadtwerke has initiated an open bidding process for the sale of its subsidiary Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo GmbH (WLC). This step is being taken because international freight transport is not part of the core business of the public service mandate of the City of Vienna and the Wiener Stadtwerke Group. The current situation in the rail logistics market is also cited as a further motivation for the sale. The goal is to find a buyer for WLC by the end of the year who is based in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom and can further develop the company's potential based on its own market strength.

Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo GmbH is an established company in the rail freight transport sector. Its roots date back to 1886, when the "Actien-Gesellschaft der Wiener Localbahnen" (Limited Company of the Wiener Local Railways) was founded and operated both passenger and freight transport. Over time, the freight transport division has developed into a key player in the national and international transport sector. WLC offers comprehensive logistics solutions for various industries and has its own route network and modern transshipment facilities. Despite its importance and potential, Wiener Stadtwerke does not consider international freight transport a strategic core of its business activities.

The sales process will be transparent and unconditional in order to find the best possible buyer for WLC. Several logistics companies and investors are expected to be interested in acquiring Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo. WLC has a well-positioned market position, an experienced team, and development potential, which should make it an attractive acquisition target. Wiener Stadtwerke emphasizes that its goal is to find a buyer who can continue to manage the company successfully over the long term and optimally utilize its market opportunities. The sale is targeted for completion by the end of 2025.
