Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports recorded a total of 2024 passengers in 3.083.405, an increase of 1,7 percent compared to the previous year. While Leipzig/Halle airport achieved growth of 4,7 percent to 2.200.981 passengers, the volume at Dresden airport fell by 5,1 percent to 882.424 passengers. The decline in Dresden is mainly due to the low demand in domestic traffic, which is around 50 percent below the level before the corona pandemic nationwide.
Leipzig/Halle Airport benefited in particular from the strong demand in tourist traffic. The most popular destinations included Turkey, Spain, Greece and Egypt. However, domestic traffic remains a challenge for both locations.
In the area of air freight, Leipzig/Halle Airport was able to maintain its position as the fifth largest air freight hub in Europe. With a freight volume of around 1,4 million tonnes, the airport reached the level of the previous year. The airport is DHL's largest hub worldwide and an important hub for express and e-commerce shipments. Over 70 cargo airlines serve almost 200 destinations worldwide.
The number of flight movements at Leipzig/Halle Airport fell by 2024 percent to 4,6 takeoffs and landings in 76.827. At Dresden Airport, the volume remained almost stable with 19.533 flight movements (-2,8 percent).
The background to this development is rising government location costs for airlines in Germany, including air traffic tax and security fees. These additional burdens are hindering the recovery of German air traffic compared to other European countries.
