AK Lower Austria strengthens presence at Vienna-Schwechat Airport

Despite careful travel planning, vacations can unexpectedly come to a standstill, whether due to flight delays, cancellations, or problems with the booked accommodation. To ensure travelers are not left alone in such situations and to provide them with prompt assistance and guidance on their rights, the Lower Austrian Chamber of Labor (AK) is once again increasing its presence at Vienna-Schwechat Airport this year.

From Friday, June 27, to Saturday, August 10, 2025, consumer advisors will be available on seven weekends directly in Terminal 1. This long-standing initiative will be personally overseen by AK Lower Austria President Markus Wieser and AK Lower Austria Director Bettina Heise, who emphasize the importance of this support for employees.

The importance of vacation time for employees

Vacation time is a precious commodity for employees. It provides time for relaxation, time with family, and recharges for the day-to-day work. If this valuable time is marred by unforeseen problems such as flight cancellations, overbookings, or accommodation deficiencies, it can lead not only to considerable frustration but also to financial losses. Especially in times when every euro counts, the Chamber of Labor is particularly concerned with ensuring that travelers receive prompt assistance in the event of a problem and are fully aware of their rights.

AK Lower Austria President Markus Wieser emphasizes: "Vacation time is precious for employees. Especially now, when many euros count for everyone, we want to ensure that travelers receive rapid assistance in the event of a problem and are aware of their rights." This statement underscores the Chamber of Labor's role as a representative of employees' interests, which extends beyond the purely work-related area and also encompasses consumer protection in the leisure sector. The presence at the airport is a direct way to offer this support where it is most urgently needed – immediately before or after a trip.

Direct assistance at the terminal: advice on the most important departure times

To reach as many travelers as possible embarking on their well-deserved vacation, the AK Consumer Advisory Service is specifically present at Vienna-Schwechat Airport during peak travel times. Sandra Nowak, travel expert and head of consumer advisory services, explains the strategy: "We are specifically present during peak travel times – Fridays from 14 p.m. to 19 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.." A dedicated information desk in Terminal 1 provides assistance to travelers directly before departure.

The range of problem cases in which the AK consultants provide assistance is diverse: From Flight cancellations and overbooking to problems with the Lodging, such as inadequate rooms or unprovided services. Sandra Nowak assures travelers: "Whether it's a flight cancellation or problems with the hotel – we're here to help." This includes explaining legal rights, assisting with claiming compensation, and, if necessary, referral to other counseling centers. The ability to contact a neutral authority directly on-site alleviates uncertainty and stress for many travelers when problems arise.

Vienna International Airport, Austria's largest airport and a major hub for international travel, is a strategically important location for this advisory initiative. Millions of passengers pass through its terminals annually, and the high frequency, especially during the summer months, makes it the ideal location for this type of consumer advisory service.

Comprehensive information and further contact options

In addition to personal advice at the airport, the AK Lower Austria also offers comprehensive written information. A compact AK folder Containing all the important information and helpful tips about flights and travel, it is available for travelers to pick up directly at the airport. This brochure serves as a practical guide and can also be useful for asserting claims after returning from vacation.

For questions and problems that arise outside of the consultation hours at the airport or that require more detailed clarification, the AK Consumer Advice Center is also available by phone at 05 7171 – 23 000 or by email at [email protected] In addition, the website of the Lower Austrian Chamber of Labor offers, among other things, a wealth of additional information on travel and consumer protection. This ensures that travelers receive comprehensive support not only locally but also through various channels.

The continuous presence of the AK Lower Austria at Vienna-Schwechat Airport for many years underscores the relevance of this service and the ongoing need to inform travelers about their rights. In an increasingly complex travel world, where flight schedules can change at short notice and travel services don't always meet expectations, independent advice is invaluable. The Chamber of Labor thus makes an important contribution to protecting consumers and ensuring that vacations, despite potential difficulties, don't turn into a financial or emotional fiasco.
