AUA and ÖBB with 60.000 Airail passengers in 2024

In 2024, Austrian Airlines and Austrian Federal Railways were able to transport approximately 60.000 passengers on the Western and Southern Railways as part of their cooperative trains. Given the total passenger count of approximately 14,59 million travelers recently reported by the airline, this represents rather low utilization of the service.

For several years, Austrian Airlines has been offering feeder flights under the Airail brand, which can be booked when purchasing a flight ticket. ÖBB Railjet trains from Innsbruck, Graz, and other stations on the Western and Southern Railways serve as feeder flights. This service is intended to complement domestic flights – where available – and offer travelers more options.

With the commissioning of the Koralmbahn, there will also be cooperative trains between Klagenfurt and Vienna-Schwechat Airport in the future. Currently, this is not possible, as a transfer at Vienna Central Station would be required. According to ÖBB, there will be paired trains in the future that serve Austria's largest airport. Austrian Airlines states that the upcoming expansion of the Airail routes will have no impact on existing domestic flights and will merely complement them.
