From February 28 to March 2, 2025, the Musical Theater Basel will witness an extraordinary dance performance when the Béjart Ballet Lausanne presents its art with a selection of masterpieces. With performances of the new work "Hamlet", the homage "Béjart et nous" and the legendary "Boléro", the world-renowned company once again proves its artistry and its importance for the dance world.
The Béjart Ballet Lausanne was founded in 1987 and has since established itself as one of the outstanding dance companies. The legendary choreographer Maurice Béjart, who led the company, was known for his innovative power and ability to present dance as a universal language. After Béjart's death in 2007, the company's future was in jeopardy. But it managed to preserve and continue his legacy. Since 2024, Julien Favreau has been directing the ensemble's fortunes as artistic director. He ensures that Béjart's legacy is not only preserved, but also expanded to include new perspectives and creations.
The Béjart Company is unique in its ability to present dance art at an international level. From the world's major stages - the NHK Hall in Tokyo, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens to the Palais des Congrès in Paris - the company captivates audiences. Their performances are an expression of the highest artistic precision and passionate performance.
"Hamlet" - The Dance of Fate
The four performances in Basel will also include the current creation "Hamlet", which premiered in June 2024. In this performance, choreographer Valentina Turcu creates a dance interpretation of Shakespeare's famous drama. The tragedy of the Danish prince is revived through dance and explores the deepest stirrings of the human soul. Turcu uses a combination of emotional drama, love and tenderness that captivates the audience.
The piece is accompanied musically by the composer Max Richter, known for his minimalist and impressive music, as well as the bands "Cigarettes After Sex" and "Muse", whose soundscapes create a modern and contemporary atmosphere. The fusion of classical dance with modern musical elements gives the production a special intensity and makes it an outstanding experience.
“Béjart et nous” – A tribute to the master
In addition to Hamlet, the company will also present Béjart et nous - a journey through the rich repertoire of the master Maurice Béjart. This program is a kaleidoscopic overview of Béjart's creative world. The performance is curated by Julien Favreau and includes a selection of pas de deux, solos and ensembles that represent Béjart's unique style. This performance not only shows the technical brilliance of the dancers, but also the immortal vitality of Béjart's vision.
The Classic “Boléro” – The Power of Repetition
The third highlight of the evening is the infamous "Boléro", which Béjart choreographed in 1961. The classic, which is based on the composition of the same name by Maurice Ravel, is notorious for its hypnotic power. The repetition of the main theme in a continuously increasing intensity up to the climax symbolizes the escalation and emotional unfolding that is brought to life through the dance. Béjart's "Boléro" is one of the few interpretations that have survived since its premiere by Bronislawa Nijinska and is considered the benchmark for all further choreographies of this work.
The performances in Basel – A must for dance lovers
The Musical Theater Basel will become the center of dance art from February 28 to March 2, 2025. Spectators will have the opportunity to be enchanted by the excellence of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne. The performances offer a unique opportunity to experience the power of dance, which hovers on the border between tradition and innovation and builds a bridge between the classical and modern dance worlds.
