Berlin-Brandenburg Airport has received the green light for the new schedule of charges, which is scheduled to come into force on September 1, 2022. In future, aircraft that the airport considers too loud will have to pay more.

The change in the fee schedule affects the regulations on noise-related take-off and landing fees. The noise-related charge is levied on aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of 2.000 kg. So far, the aircraft have been divided into different noise classes based on their type. The noise fee was calculated as a flat rate. In the future, this procedure will be replaced by a case-by-case calculation of the noise charges. This is based on the noise level actually measured for each individual take-off and each individual landing.

“We are pleased that the system we developed for the differentiated calculation of noise charges has now been approved. The new methodology creates a financial incentive for the airlines to fly as quietly as possible. This not only refers to the use of the machines, but also to the use of appropriate flight procedures to reduce noise. The result benefits our neighbors in particular: the new regulation helps to reduce noise for all residents," says airport boss Aletta von Massenbach.

Airlines have to pay fees to the respective airport for each take-off and each landing. How high these are depends on many factors - the weight of the aircraft used, the number of passengers, the time of day and the noise emissions of the aircraft. For German airports, the legislator stipulates that a noise component must be included in the calculation of airport charges. The airport charges for the use of facilities and services related to the lighting, take-off, landing and parking of aircraft and the handling of passengers and cargo are to be approved by the licensing authorities of the federal states.
