The low-cost airline Wizz Air will add Bosnian Airport Mostar to its route network in the 2022 summer flight schedule. A corresponding agreement between the airport and the airline has already been signed.
For several years, Mostar airport management has been trying to attract low-cost airlines. To this end, negotiations were held with Ryanair and Wizz Air, among others. The first-named carrier steers to the destinations of Banja Luka and Tuzla in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The pink competitor also has Sarajevo in its route network. Wizz Air also wants to fly to Mostar in the 2023 summer flight schedule.
The flights to this airport cannot be booked at the moment, since the offer is still being planned according to the information provided by the airport and the carrier. There are currently rumors that Malmö and Dortmund could be among the first routes, but no one has yet officially confirmed this.
“Mostar Airport has signed an important agreement with Wizz Air, Europe's fastest growing airline, which will enable the launch of scheduled flights next summer. This will help connect Mostar and the entire Herzegovina region to popular European destinations and boost economic development and tourism," Mostar Airport said in a statement.
However, Wizz Air will not fly without an incentive, because the Herzegovina-Neretva region wants to support airlines flying to Mostar Airport in the form of subsidies. However, the exact amount was not disclosed. The corona pandemic has led to the fact that, apart from charter flights, the flight offer has almost completely come to a standstill and has not yet been able to be restored.
From Wizz Air's point of view, this is the fourth airport that will be included in the route network in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is currently present in Sarajevo, Tuzla and Banja Luka. The flights are primarily used for so-called “visiting friends and relatives” traffic. This is one of the most important pillars of the low-cost airline's business model.
