Central Military Club Sofia: Impressive event location with the best catering

Right in the center of the Bulgarian capital Sofia is the "Central Military Club", an extraordinary location for events, plays and also extensive dinners. The historic building was officially opened in 1903 and is still under military administration today. However, it is used almost exclusively for civilian purposes. Before the Second World War, this location was almost exclusively reserved for the royal family, the armed forces and the upper class. That changed suddenly, because after a long period of use as an officers' club, it was more or less opened to the public. Since the last general renovation, the Central Military Club has developed into a multifunctional cultural center that is now indispensable. The only thing you notice when you enter is the flags of the EU, Bulgaria and NATO that it is actually a military property. Otherwise, the owner of the house does not really want to be noticed, because apart from the occasional state and military event, it is almost exclusively used for civilian purposes. The so-called Central Military Library, which claims to have around 120.000 volumes, is located in this building and is also open to the general public during regular opening hours. A reminder of the Serbian-Bulgarian War embedded in the foundation The Central Military Club was designed by the Czech architect Antonín Kolář, but he was unable to complete the building as he died in 1900. The building was therefore completed under the supervision of his Bulgarian colleague Nikola Lasarow. A piece of rubble from the battlefield of the Serbian-Bulgarian War was embedded in the foundation. Today, however, only a discreet memorial plaque reminds us of this. The architecture of the

Scores with salad, staff and dessert: The Grand Balkan Palace in Sofia

In the heart of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, the Grand Balkan Palace is a five-star hotel that has been in operation since 1956. The imposing building dates back to a time when it was all about doing things in a big way, not by halves. This article is limited to the hotel's gastronomic offerings. As soon as you enter, you notice that the Grand Balkan Palace has a very interesting architecture. The lobby is simple, but with high-quality flooring and extremely high ceilings. Just as was usual in the 1950s if you wanted to impress. Back then, fitness rooms with modern equipment were unthinkable. So it is open in the basement, right in front of the toilet doors. It seems a little unusual, but please, that's how it should be. Modern ballroom in a traditional house The hotel's large ballroom is a popular place for parties, seminars, conferences and other events. Contrary to what the historic building would suggest from the outside, this room scores points with modern equipment. You would hardly believe that you are in an old house, except when you go to the cloakroom or the toilet, for example, because a lot of emphasis has obviously been placed on preserving the original character of the architecture in the common areas. At the end of November 2024, an evening event of the Aviation Event Sofia took place in the ballroom of the Grand Balkan Palace Hotel. It was also shown that the technical equipment in the hall is state-of-the-art, because, for example, the current winner of "Voice of Bulgaria" performed. Presentations at the

New AUA lounge scores with relaxation chairs and focus on light fare

For a few weeks now, Austrian Airlines has been offering business class passengers and Star Alliance status customers a new lounge in the non-Schengen area of Terminal 3 at Vienna Airport. It is already clear that this is only a temporary facility, because when the southern extension goes into operation, there will also be completely new lounges. Until now, the non-Schengen lounge was located immediately to the right after passport control. This location has been abandoned. According to Austrian Airlines, the reason for this is that the southern extension construction site means that no more daylight can get in and, on top of that, the noise is disturbing for guests. The lounge has therefore been moved to the area of the former gates G1 to G3. This was a major challenge for the project team, because in many places electrical connections for lighting, sockets, technology, etc. were needed, but these were not even available. These had to be installed by electricians first. Several kilometers of power cables were therefore re-laid so that, for example, the refrigerators have power or passengers can charge their smartphones, tablets or laptops. Power sockets at almost every seat In this context, great importance was attached to ensuring that at least one power socket is available at all seats. There are exceptions for free-standing armchairs in the relaxation zone. AUA has thus responded to criticism, as power sockets were previously particularly popular at peak times. With the new non-Schengen lounge, Austrian Airlines is also introducing a new catering concept that differs from the others that are operated at Vienna Airport. In concrete terms, care is taken to ensure that mainly light meals are served.

Viennese beer bar to serve vegan cuisine in January 2025

The Viennese restaurant "Hawidere" in the 15th district plans to offer daily changing vegan dishes next January. Under the motto "Soul food instead of fast food", the restaurant is expanding its menu to include vegan options ranging from burgers to soups and snacks to desserts. Dominique Schilk, managing director of "Hawidere", emphasizes that the aim is to introduce guests to a conscious diet without demanding a complete switch to vegan food. The restaurant's vegan burgers are prepared with homemade patties made from beans, chickpeas and Brussels sprouts. Patties based on soy and wheat protein are also used to meet the trend towards meat substitutes. The restaurant's vegan menu and prices can be viewed at this link. The "Hawidere" campaign is part of the international "Veganuary" campaign, which encourages people around the world to try a vegan diet in January. The non-profit organization has seen increasing numbers of participants every year since it was founded in the UK in 2014. In January 2024, over 1,8 million people worldwide registered on the Veganuary website to take part in the campaign. The campaign is gaining increasing attention in Austria. According to a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov, around 2024% of Austria's adult population took part in Veganuary in January 3, which corresponds to just over 220.000 people. A further 11% actively reduced their consumption of animal products during this period.

A look at the new apprenticeship "Specialist in vegetarian cuisine"

With the introduction of the new apprenticeship "Vegetarian Culinary Specialist", Austria is setting a striking example in the field of plant-based nutrition. As the European champion of vegans with a share of 5% of the population, the country is now also setting new standards in vegetarian cooking training in an international context. The Vegan Society Austria is proud of this step, which not only represents a further development of gastronomic training, but also sends a signal to the entire industry to take the demand for meat-free, plant-based dishes seriously. "Austria can be proud: With 5% of people living vegan, Austria is European champion and, as of today, even world champion in terms of meat-free cooking training!", says Felix Hnat, chairman of the Vegan Society Austria, delighted with the introduction of this new professional qualification. The high proportion of people living vegan in Austria is not only an expression of a societal development towards a more conscious diet, but also a result of years of efforts by organizations such as the Vegan Society, which are committed to spreading plant-based lifestyles. The necessity and success of the “Vegucation” project The “Vegucation” project, which was launched by the Vegan Society of Austria and its vocational partner schools, has achieved remarkable success in recent years. 43 partner schools have already recognized the demand for knowledge and skills in plant-based cooking and have developed corresponding courses. The positive response to the project underlines the trend towards greater consideration of vegetarian and vegan nutrition in gastronomy training. “The apprenticeship is the logical conclusion!” emphasizes Lisa Klein,

Newly renovated Hilton Sofia: Points deducted for breakfast

The Hilton Hotel Sofia, located in the heart of the Bulgarian capital, is one of the most famous international hotel brands in the region. With a strategic location in the immediate vicinity of the National Palace of Culture and the city park "South Park", the hotel combines luxury, business functionality and a touch of modernity. Nevertheless, some aspects of the offer and the quality of service are in the tension between the high expectations of international guests and the regional reality. The location of the hotel has its advantages and disadvantages. The accommodation is quickly accessible from the airport and numerous sights in the city center can be reached in a few minutes on foot. However, there are extremely busy roads on two sides of the building. Due to the soundproof glazing, you don't really notice this in the hotel, but it is still worth pointing out. The Hilton Sofia is easy to reach by public transport, as there is a bus stop in the immediate vicinity, for example. An exhibition on a pedestrian bridge diagonally opposite the hotel - on the way to the local branch of a fast food chain - seems a bit odd. This is sponsored by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China and deals with the Chinese space program. It defies all logic why it is located on a pedestrian overpass on a highway-like road. Modernly equipped rooms The Hilton Sofia offers a wide range of amenities tailored to both business and leisure travelers. The rooms have been recently renovated and are decorated in warm colors. They feature modern technologies such as 40-inch LED TVs, Smart TVs and desks for business travelers. Other features include a minibar,
