DDSG Blue Danube: 195 Years of Tradition and Growth on the Danube

The year 2024 marks an outstanding chapter in the history of DDSG Blue Danube. With the celebration of its 195th anniversary, the addition of two new ships and a growth course, the traditional shipping company is consolidating its key role in Austrian inland shipping. The expansion of the fleet through the acquisition of the MS Austria and MS Vienna from the Lower Austrian Brandner Schifffahrt strengthens the tourist infrastructure in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau in particular.

The DDSG Blue Danube looks back on a history that goes back to 1829, when the First Danube Steamship Company was founded. Since its re-establishment in 1995 as a joint venture between Wien Holding and Verkehrsbüro, the shipping company has developed into a leading provider of tourist trips on the Danube. Today, the company operates a fleet of nine ships that carry more than 400.000 passengers annually.

With the addition of the MS Austria and MS Vienna, capacity was significantly increased, particularly in the Wachau region. The Wachau, known for its picturesque landscapes and historical sights, experienced a 46 percent increase in passenger numbers last year. A total of 129.024 guests took the opportunity to experience this region from the water.

Challenges and Successes in the Anniversary Year

However, 2024 was not without its challenges. The flood of the century significantly affected the shipping company's operations. For several weeks, both the Danube and the Danube Canal in Vienna were temporarily impassable. Nevertheless, DDSG Blue Danube was able to maintain its position as a strong partner in the region through flexible solutions, such as setting up a stop on demand in Aggsbach-Dorf.

The company also showed strength in the charter business, which grew by five percent. Corporate parties, weddings and theme cruises such as the popular Sunset Barbecue Cruise or après-ski parties on the ship attracted numerous guests and proved to be highlights of the offering.

Education and Future Vision

DDSG Blue Danube also takes its responsibility as a training company seriously. 15 apprentices are currently being trained, many of whom are aiming for a long-term career with the shipping company. A remarkable 42 percent of employees began their careers at DDSG, some of whom now hold responsible positions as captains.

Further investments and innovations are planned for 2025, the 30th anniversary of the "new" DDSG Blue Danube. The fleet is to be modernized, the offer expanded to include culinary and cultural experiences and new products introduced. Managing Director Wolfgang Fischer emphasized that the shipping company will continue to stay on course with attractive and innovative offers.

A look at the future

With a wide range of themed cruises, new tourist partnerships and a harmonized timetable, DDSG Blue Danube is optimistic about the future. The shipping company also remains active in cross-border traffic: last year its ships connected the Danube metropolises of Vienna and Bratislava 38 times.

The DDSG Blue Danube is more than a transport company - it is a symbol of the combination of tradition and modernity, of regional pride and international networking. With its 195-year history and a clear vision for the future, it remains a central player on the Danube.
