The state of Carinthia has not only been concerned with the Corona crisis in recent months: The new building of the Klagenfurt prison has also been under discussion for a long time.

Years of searching for the right location are now a thing of the past. Because: Klagenfurt Airport was chosen as the location. As early as this month, the big project will be presented to the public like 5min.at reported. But the choice of location has met with criticism. “There should actually have been a new trade fair, important companies and a hotel around the airport. Now the prison should become the new attraction in the area of the airport? ”, Says Team Carinthia boss Gerhard Köfer.

"The fact that the largest public building project in Carinthia is currently a prison must give many Carinthians and especially our young people something to think about," says Köfer. He also questions the Europe-wide search for an architect and demands the disclosure of all six projects that were shortlisted: "Here, comprehensive transparency is required, which I also warn in the interests of the population and taxpayers."

Team Klagenfurt boss Klaus-Jürgen Jandl, however, sees the location of the new prison as positive. In a recent broadcast he explains: “The decision to build the new prison in Klagenfurt near Klagenfurt Airport is an important and absolutely correct decision for the state capital. Not only that a prison in the center of a city has no business and that the location on the periphery was chosen correctly, there is now also the possibility of ensuring the urgently needed spatial expansion for the regional court and public prosecutor's office. The fact that with the expected investment of 55-60 million euros jobs will also be created during and after the new building is another positive aspect of this decision. "
