Despite mobility restrictions caused by the pandemic in the first half of 2021, a total of 2021 passengers used Dortmund Airport from January to December 1.692.960. In the previous year there were still 1.220.624.

In the current outlook for the summer flight schedule, the number of movements and the number of flight destinations are even significantly above the level of 2019. However, the utilization rates are still not at the level before the pandemic, according to the airport in a broadcast. In January and February 2022, a total of 243.787 passengers used Dortmund Airport (previous year: 74.514). For the past year, the (probable) annual result is minus 15,6 million euros (2020: minus 21,8 million euros). The EU operating result (annual result without depreciation, interest and sovereign costs) was almost halved from minus 12 million euros in 2020 to minus 6,2 million euros in 2021.

"Despite the effects of the pandemic situation on passenger numbers, extensive measures have made it possible to achieve an economic result in line with the business plan," says airport boss Ludger van Bebber. Both aviation and non-aviation revenues increased compared to the previous year. The final results will be presented at the Supervisory Board meeting in June 2021 after the audit has been completed and the 2022 annual financial statements have been approved. "Based on the current positive passenger development, we are sticking to our goal of achieving a positive EU operating result by 2023 - despite the clear negative impact of the pandemic," predicts van Bebber.

Two photovoltaic systems are to be set up

The Airport Supervisory Board has approved the construction of two 1.700 square meter photovoltaic systems on the roof areas of several aircraft hangars. Dortmund Airport has been using 2015 percent green electricity since 100. Starting this year, the first photovoltaic systems are to generate their own electricity from solar energy. The aim of operating the systems is to reduce up to 200 tons of CO2 per year compared to traditional electricity purchases.
