On October 12, 2024, a comprehensive emergency exercise took place at Innsbruck Airport, which was initiated by the siren alarm at 14:47 p.m.

The exercise, which was carried out in cooperation with the Innsbruck Red Cross, the Innsbruck Fire Department and the police, simulated the emergency of a passenger aircraft with 128 people on board that veers off the runway during takeoff and comes to a stop in a banking position. The aim of the exercise was to test the care and psychosocial support of the passengers and crew members as well as the coordination processes between the organizations and authorities involved.

A total of around 280 people took part in the exercise, including 100 extras from all over Tyrol who authentically slipped into the scenarios. Airport manager Marco Pernetta stressed the importance of the knowledge gained for the existing emergency procedures. Petra Sansone, head of the crisis intervention team of the Innsbruck Red Cross, emphasized the importance of such exercises in order to be optimally prepared in an emergency.

Large-scale emergency drills are required by the authorities for airports every two years and serve to continuously improve emergency plans. This drill was planned so that it did not disrupt regular flight operations and fell during a quiet time of day.
