Eurowings stops Graz-Stuttgart

While Graz Airport celebrated the launch of a Eurowings non-stop connection to Berlin just a few days ago, the airport will lose another Austria-Germany connection at the end of April 2023. The Lufthansa subsidiary will discontinue the Stuttgart route.

The former Austrian Airlines route was established together with Graz-Düsseldorf and Linz-Düsseldorf ahanded over to the sister company Eurowings. Previously, AUA mainly used de Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprop aircraft on the three routes mentioned. After the takeover by Eurowings, the significantly larger Airbus A319/A320 was used predominantly. The machines are also no longer based in Austria, which has resulted in unattractive flight times for business travellers.

Eurowings has repeated the Germany routes from Linz and Graz temporarily suspended. A few weeks ago it was announced that from Upper Austria will no longer fly to Dusseldorf. In a press release, the airport said that the Airbus jets used had proved to be too large and that efforts would be made to find an alternative carrier, for example from the Lufthansa Group. So far, however, there has been no success.

Now the Eurowings cutback also affects the connection between Graz and Stuttgart. This will be served as a non-stop flight for the last time on April 28, 2023. From May 2023, it will still be possible to travel from Styria to Baden-Württemberg on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but only with a change in Berlin-Brandenburg. This is unlikely to be very attractive for business travellers, especially those from the automotive industry.

This is not the first cut made by the Lufthansa Group in Graz. The connection to the Munich hub was reduced from up to five daily rotations to a maximum of one daily. As a result, passengers leaving Styria have significantly fewer transfer options at the second largest Kranich hub. Although Eurowings opened a base at Graz Airport, however, with the exception of Berlin-Brandenburg, routes with a tourist character are mainly served. It is also still unclear whether the base will only be maintained seasonally in summer or all year round.

After EW is planning the destinations HRG (2x), LPA (2x) and TFS (1x) in the winter flight schedule ex GRZ, the Airbus will probably remain stationed in GRZ in winter...
