Austria's commercial airports were able to increase in January and February 2020, but on March 2020 it went down steeply in euros due to the outbreak of the corona pandemic. The months with the sharpest decline compared to 2019 were April, May and June 2020. There was then a brief recovery.

While 2020 passengers flew from Austrian airports in February 2.569.445, by April 2020 there were only 12.800 travelers. From May 2020 up to and including August 2020, the monthly use of passenger air traffic increased to 858.201 passengers (August 2020). Since then, things have been going downhill again.

Since September 2020, fewer passengers have been counting at Austrian airports every month. The "new low" was in November 2020 with 186.631 travelers. A very slight upswing was recorded in December 2020 with 234.379 passengers. However, this is not an indication of a recovery, but rather reflects the question about Christmas, which increases every year, at a very low level.

chart by Visualizer

A similar picture emerges when looking at flight movements. In the months of January and February 2020, the Austrian airports were also able to grow here, with an increase of seven percent to 2020 take-offs and landings in February 24.073. In March 2020, the number of flights fell by 51 percent to 14.242. The low point was reached in April 2020 with 1.103 take-offs and landings. From May 2020, it went up again from a low level and in August 2020 the temporary peak of recovery was reached with 11.505 flight movements.

The number of take-offs and landings at Austrian airports has been decreasing again since September 2020 and reached the provisional new low in December 2020 with 4.477 flight movements. It is interesting that the number of flights has decreased in direct comparison with November 2020, but more passengers were carried. This is an indication that the load factor could have been quite acceptable on some routes in December 2020.

Vienna

The nationwide developments in 2020 are clearly visible at Vienna International Airport. In January and February 2020, the values of the record year 2019 were exceeded before air traffic collapsed due to the pandemic. The low point was in April 2020 with 960 aircraft movements and 12.632 passengers.

chart by Visualizer

The recovery of air traffic got a kink from September 2020, because since then both the flights and the number of travelers have decreased again. Most recently in December 2020, Vienna had 4.077 take-offs and landings, which were used by 226.837 passengers. Here, too, it can be seen that the airlines offered fewer flights in a direct comparison with November 2020, but that more passengers were using them due to the annual Christmas season. In November 2020 Vienna-Schwechat had 181.115 travelers.

Graz

The Styrian airport was also able to grow in January and February 2020, but from March 2020 air traffic collapsed. The low point was reached in April 2020 with 11 commercial flight movements used by only 14 passengers. In May 2020 it was hardly better with 31 passengers on 70 flights. Up to and including September 2020, both the number of flight movements and the number of travelers increased. The provisional high was 13.080 passengers.

chart by Visualizer

In Graz it is clear that the offer was expanded in October 2020, but was not accepted by the market. The number of flight movements increased to 334 take-offs and landings, but only 10.006 passengers flew from Graz. The additional flights were withdrawn from November 2020 and the airport was also unable to benefit from the increased demand around Christmas. The "new low" was reached in December 2020 with 2.523 passengers on 98 flights.

Innsbruck

The Tyrolean Airport also started with a plus in January and February 2020, but from March 2020 usage collapsed dramatically. The low point was in May 2020, as there were no commercial flights or passengers. Up to and including August 2020, Innsbruck was able to gradually increase to 193 flights or 11.833 passengers. Since then, usage has fallen significantly, with the "new low" being in November 1.299 with 64 travelers on 2020 flights.

chart by Visualizer

In December 2020 Innsbruck counted 108 take-offs and landings and 2.105 passengers. This airport was therefore able to benefit from the increased demand around Christmas at a very low level.

chart by Visualizer

Innsbruck has another problem, however: this airport makes most of its annual traffic in the first quarter. Due to the entry and quarantine restrictions, but also the ban on accommodation, business with winter sports enthusiasts has collapsed to almost zero.

Klagenfurt

Klagenfurt Airport (Photo: René Steuer).

The Carinthian airport already started in January and February 2020 with a minus. This further will be available from March 2020. In April, May and June 2020, Klagenfurt did not count a single passenger flight and subsequently no passengers either.

chart by Visualizer

From July 2020, the use of the airport recovered at a low level. In September 2020, there were 76 commercial flights used by 3.729 passengers. In October 2020 there were more flight movements with 108 take-offs and landings, but the number of travelers fell to 3.392.

chart by Visualizer

The "new low" was reached in December 2020 with only 16 flights and 303 passengers. Thus Klagenfurt could not benefit from the Christmas business. An improvement is not expected in the short term, as the only two scheduled routes (Cologne / Bonn and Vienna) are currently not served by Eurowings or Austrian Airlines due to a lack of demand.

Linz

Linz Airport (Photo: René Steuer).

The Upper Austrian airport is the one that has been hardest hit by the corona crisis, because the scheduled routes of Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa have been on a break since March 2020. The announced resumptions have been repeatedly postponed and are currently announced for March 2021.

chart by Visualizer

Linz was able to gain eight percent in February 2020 before the numbers collapsed. Compared to other federal state airports, the airport recorded significantly more flight movements, which can be attributed to the freight business. For example, DHL and Turkish Cargo fly to the Upper Austrian airport with freighters.

In terms of passengers, Linz reached its low point in April 2020, not a single passenger was counted this month. Up to and including August 2020, both the number of flight movements and the number of passengers increased. In the summer month mentioned, 1.680 travelers were counted. Since then, usage has decreased again and in December 2020 the new low was reached with 96 commercial flight movements and 197 passengers.

chart by Visualizer

Linz could not benefit from the Christmas business, but that is not surprising either, because the routes to Düsseldorf and Frankfurt am Main were not served. The Upper Austrian airport therefore had no access to the hubs of Eurowings (Düsseldorf) and Lufthansa (Frankfurt).

Salzburg

Salzburg Airport (Photo: Salzburg Airport Presse).

This airport was also able to expand in February 2020 before air traffic collapsed dramatically on March 2020. The low point was in April 2020 with four flights used by 11 passengers. The traffic then recovered at a low level up to and including August 2020. In that month, 381 flights were carried out and 30.704 passengers used them.

chart by Visualizer

Since then, the use of Salzburg Airport has decreased again. The "new low" was reached in November 2020 with 27 take-offs and landings or 724 passengers. In December 2020 there were 82 flights and 2.414 passengers. Thus, Salzburg could benefit a little bit from the Christmas business.

chart by Visualizer

Salzburg has the same problem as Innsbruck: this airport normally has the lion's share of traffic in the first quarter. The business with winter sports enthusiasts, however, does not exist this year due to the entry and quarantine regulations. The ban on accommodation also has a negative effect on the use of the second largest airport in the Alpine republic.
