Berlin-Brandenburg Airport is plagued not only by the sharp decline in income due to the corona pandemic, but also by debts in the form of construction costs. Now the shareholders - the federal government as well as the states of Berlin and Brandenburg - want to forego the repayment of around 500 million euros.

According to a report by the news magazine "Der Spiegel", these are emergency loans that were granted due to the corona pandemic. The report refers to a response from the federal government, which was given in response to a parliamentary question from the group of the Greens. So far, however, it is only a plan, because according to the Federal Ministry of Transport, the project should be clarified with the EU Commission "promptly".

In March 2021, the management of Flughafen Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH stated that the additional financial requirement would amount to around 1,9 billion euros. The first aid that was paid out was given by the shareholders in the form of loans that have to be repaid. Debt relief therefore requires the approval of the competition watchdog in Brussels.
