Just recently, the Gulf carrier claimed, in one of its many legal battles with Airbus, that the letter of intent for the purchase of Boeing 737 Max 10s, secured at the beginning of this year, had expired . This wasn't entirely credible, however, as the European aircraft manufacturer had terminated its delivery contract for 50 A321neos to Qatar Airways , and the 737 Max 10 represents the only comparable alternative.
In any case, Boeing and the Gulf carrier announced in Farnborough on Thursday that a purchase agreement for 25 B737 Max 10 aircraft had been signed. At the same time, Qatar Airways secured options for up to 25 additional aircraft. Currently, however, this is essentially a preliminary order, as this aircraft type has not yet received certification. Boeing is now exerting pressure through all available channels, as new certification criteria will come into effect at the beginning of next year. Most recently, the manufacturer even threatened to discontinue the program.
