The bus connection between Graz and Vienna, operated by Flixbus in cooperation with the Austrian company Dr. Richard, is one of the most successful and busiest routes in Austria.

Since it opened in 2014, the connection has become a real success story. Over the past ten years, more than 4 million passengers have been transported and the buses have covered a total of 25 million kilometers. These impressive figures not only demonstrate the high demand, but also the importance of the route as part of the Austrian public transport network.

Busy connection between Graz and Vienna

The route between the two largest cities in Styria and Lower Austria has continuously developed due to the constantly increasing demand. Originally started as a smaller connection, the service was expanded over time to accommodate the large number of passengers. Today, 11 buses run daily on the route between Graz and Vienna, driven by around 30 drivers. The high frequency and flexibility of the service make the connection equally attractive for commuters, tourists and business travelers.

The route records particularly high passenger numbers on weekends, in the summer months and around Christmas. Demand is so high that Flixbus has already introduced an additional Saturday connection between Graz and Vienna's Karlsplatz in 2024, which will remain in place in the future. This adjustment to the timetable is another indication of the steady and continuous development of the route, which has become firmly established in the everyday travel routine of many Austrians.

Successful return of lost items

With the high number of passengers come the challenges of daily logistics and organization. Personal items are regularly left behind on the bus, especially cell phones, tablets and suitcases. In some cases, these lost items are tracked down by Flixbus and the Dr. Richard Group and returned to their owners.

A particularly unusual case was when an Asian passenger's notebook was successfully returned to its owner after a long period of time. A five-figure sum of cash that was found in one of the buses was also returned to its rightful owner without any problems. Such incidents show that customer service is very important to Flixbus and Dr. Richard and that a careful and responsible solution is found even in cases like these.

The importance of the Graz-Vienna connection for sustainable mobility

The successful development of this bus connection is seen by those responsible as an important contribution to promoting sustainable mobility. Dr. Ludwig Richard, owner of the Dr. Richard Group, commented on this in a press release and emphasized the importance of the route for both residents and tourists in Austria. "Our Graz-Vienna connection with Flixbus has been a real success story over the past ten years and is very popular. As a traditional Austrian company, it is important to us to create cost-effective and convenient travel options for residents and tourists with 'Flixbus by Dr. Richard'," said Richard.

Flixbus itself, represented by Daniel Packenius, Vice President for the DACH and Nordics regions, also highlighted the importance of this route. Packenius said that the Graz-Vienna connection impressively shows how sustainable, convenient and affordable mobility solutions can be adopted by people. In recent years, this connection has helped to further strengthen public transport in the country and convince an even larger number of people of the advantages of long-distance bus travel.

Outlook on the future of the Graz-Vienna connection

In the coming years, it can be assumed that the route will continue to play a central role in Austrian long-distance transport. Due to the high demand and the convenient service, the connection will continue to play an important role for commuters and travelers between the capital Vienna and the Styrian capital Graz. The continuous expansion of the service, such as the introduction of additional connections, will probably also offer a high level of flexibility for passengers in the future.

Through the partnership with Flixbus, Dr. Richard was able to optimize the use of the bus connection and meet demand in a targeted manner. As a provider of a modern and extensively networked long-distance bus network, Flixbus is ideally positioned to further promote the growth of the Graz-Vienna route and to further increase the attractiveness of the service.
